GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • After school tutoring will resume in the Librarytoday, Thursday.
  • CIF Playoffs1st Round on Friday, November 10 at7:00pm. Falcons take on Mira Costa @ Moyse Stadium (GHS). Tickets on sale at snack and lunch (cash or check only) in the Student Store. Students with ID (and children 5-13) are $5 and adults are $10. ASB cards are NOT accepted for CIF Playoffs. All attendees, students and adults must pay for entry.
  • ~Community Service Opportunity ~Sue’s Garden, a local non-profit food pantry, needs help sorting canned goods. Sorting will take place from 10:00am-3:00pm, Saturday, November 11, at Community Life First Baptist Church located at 4441 La Crescenta Ave. Questions? Email Sue’

  • Announcing auditions for the spring musical, Oliver, Monday, November 13, at 3:15pm in the auditorium. Prepare a 30-second song a cappella. It is not required to have a headshot and resume, but it is recommended.
  • Sophomores – Applications are now available for HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar). Open to all 10th graders, HOBY motivates and develops future student leaders, preparing them for positions in their schools and communities. While attending this all-expense paid 3-day seminar, students are introduced to distinguished community leaders from various sectors of business, technology, education, government, arts & science. The seminar will be held on June 22-24, 2018, at Cal Poly, Pomona. Pick up an application from your English teacher or Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office. Deadline to apply is November 14, 2017.
  • Baseball Tryouts –Thursday, November 16, 5:00pm, Stengel Field. This tryout is for all Frosh and any new players that are 10th-12th graders. Wear your baseball gear.
  • Blood Drive

Everyone 17 years and older: the Blood Drive is on Thursday, November 16 from 7:30am-12:30pm. One person’s donation save three lives. Come and pick up an application in the ASB room (1101). Every application requires a parent signature, regardless of donor’s age. Breakfast and snacks will be provided. Applications are due Wednesday, November 15.

  • Hike on downstairs to the UndergroundTheater and help celebrate National Take-A-Hike Day at our next ComedySportz match on Friday, November 17 at 7:00pm. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults. This match is TD! Watch it!

  • Students who would be interested in learning more about tobacco, e-cigarettes and hookah smoking and how it affects your health, there is a TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention and Education) program meeting every Tuesday lunch in room 1106. All are welcome, pizza provided.

CURRENT SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIESNovember, 2017

John M. Belk Scholarship, Davidson College– Are you a graduating senior considering Davidson College? If so, look into the Belk scholarship. This award recognizes and rewards students of demonstrated intellectual, personal achievement and leadership. Davidson College selects eight Belk Scholars each year. This annually renewable award is equivalent to the college’s comprehensive fees (valued at over $63,000). Nomination materials are available at and deadline to apply is Nov. 10, 2017.

Maryknoll Student Essay Contest – is open to all students in grades 9-12. Length of essay is 500-750 words and 2017 theme – “cite examples of violence and tell what actions you would take or could take to promote peace.” Information and contest rules available at Deadline-Nov. 10, 2017

TheNSA (National Security Agency)is again offering theStokes Educational Scholarship. This award is open to all high school seniors who plan to major in computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering in college (minority students are encouraged to apply). Wells Fargo Scholarship Program for People with Disabilities – In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Wells Fargo has committed $1 million over the next 4 years to help people with disabilities obtain the education or training necessary to succeed in the career path of their choice. Awards open to high school graduates who have a min. 3.0 GPA (on 4.0 scale). Additional information and application are available at Deadline-Nov. 28, 2017

Sixt Scholars Program – Sixt Rent A Car is pleased to offer 5 high school seniors graduating in 2018 the opportunity to receive a $5,000 scholarship to continue their education in college. Students must have a min. 3.7 GPA and plan to enroll full time in a 2-yr or 4-yr. college. Information and application are available at Deadline-Nov. 30, 2017

Edison Scholars Program – awarding $40,000 (4-year) scholarships to students majoring in the STEM fields: computer & information systems, engineering, engineering technology, management information systems, mathematics, natural resources and conservation or physical sciences. Burger King Scholars Program – awards scholarship to help graduating seniors offset the cost of attending college. Recipients are selected based on their GPA (min. 2.0), work experience, extracurricular activities and/or community service. Students can be attending a 2-yr or 4-yr college/university or vocational/technical school. Apply @ Deadline-Dec. 15, 2017

AXA Achievement Scholarship Fund – provides scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors. Awards range from $2500 - $25,000 and are granted to seniors who plan to enroll full-time in an accredited 2-yr or 4-yr college/university for the 2017-18 academic year. Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Program – seeks to honor student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, in their school and within their communities. Foot Locker Scholar Athletes embody good sportsmanship, strong moral character, display academic excellence and are confident and enthusiast leaders. Applicants must be current high school seniors who will be entering a 4-yr college in the Fall of 2018, be a member (in good standing) on a high school sports team or be involved in after-school sports (e.g. intramural, martial arts, etc.), have a min. 3.0 GPA and be a US citizen or permanent legal resident. APIASF (Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund) provides scholarships to underserved AAPI students who will be enrolling in a U.S. accredited college or university in the Fall. Students must have a min. 2.7 GPA and apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA. Additional information and application are available at Deadline-January, 2018

The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is a national program that awards college scholarships to high school seniors who embody the characteristics of President Ronald Reagan at their school, in the community, in the workplace and at home. Applicants must demonstrate the attributes of leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship; strong academic performance (min. 3.0 GPA), and plans to enroll full-time at an accredited 4-year college/university. The Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award– The Helen Diller Family Foundation sponsors this scholarship to supportJewishteen leaders and inspire future generations of strong Jewish leaders in the global community. The award provides $36,000 to each of 15 recipients so that they may use it to further their community service project or education. Washington Crossing Foundation– awarding scholarships ranging from $500 - $5000 to graduating seniors who are planning careers in government service (local, state or federal). Check out organization’s website – information (official rules, requirements, procedures and downloadable application). Award also based on one-page essay stating why he/she plans a career in government service.Deadline to apply isJan. 15, 2018.

Union Plus Scholarship Program – is offering grants ranging from $500 - $4000 to assist union members and their children to attend college. Applicants are evaluated based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need and content of essay. A min. 3.0 GPA is recommended. Students apply online at Deadline-Jan. 31, 2018

California State PTAoffers scholarship awards of $750 each to acknowledge the achievements of high school seniors for volunteer service in school and community. Seniors must be members of their school’s PTA/PTSA unit in good standing. Scholarships can be used for study at any accredited 2-yr or 4-yr college, or trade/technical school. The Jackie Robinson Foundation – provides scholarships to disadvantaged minority high school students, planning to attend an accredited 4-yr college/university. Students should also demonstrate leadership potential, dedication to community service and financial need. Application and information are available at. Deadline-Feb. 1, 2018

Mothers of Multiples Clubs, Inc.– is offering scholarships to graduating multiple birth students (twins, triplets or higher). Students must be planning to attend a college/ university or trade/vocational school in the fall. Award based on financial need, academic achievement, educational background and extracurricular activities. Information and application are available at deadline toapply isFeb. 5, 2018

Sons of Italy Western Foundation – announces the availability of academic and athletic scholarships for graduating seniors in the Class of 2018. Awards are open to students who are wholly or partially of Italian descent and will be enrolling in an accredited trade school, college, university or community college in the Fall. SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS

Calvin Coolidge Scholars Program – is offering a full-ride, merit scholarship (covers tuition, room, board and expenses) for 4 years of undergraduate study at ANY accredited college or university in the U.S. The awards are for students planning to pursue ANY academic discipline of study. Students apply for the Coolidge scholarship during their junior year of high school.
