Creative Thinking Lesson Plan Two Dawn Leuning

Figurative Language

Students look for examples of figurative language (similes, metaphors, and personification) in “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” After this is done students will be divided into groups of three. They will be given 5 minutes to come up with a way to draw an example of figurative language from the book The Polar Express which they have been doing activities with all week. Students take turns drawing their examples and the rest of the students guess what the figurative language from the book is and whether it is a simile, metaphor, or personification.

You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch

You're a mean one Mr. Grinch!
You really are a heel.
You're as cuddly as a cactus.
You’re as charming as an eel.
Mr. Grinch
You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel

Draw-it

You will be divided into six groups of 3. You will be given about 5 minutes to decide who draws what to express your example of figurative language to more clearly express the plain language above. The rest of the class will guess what your group is trying to express by drawing. (These are examples taken from the book The Polar Express.)

Saw a train standing perfectly still…

Ate candies with nougat centers as white as snow…

Drank hot cocoa as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars…

Faster and faster we ran along, rolling over peaks and through valleys like a car on a roller coaster…

We crossed a barren desert of ice – The Great Polar Ice Cap…

Lights in the distance looked like the lights of a strange ocean liner sailing on a frozen sea…the North Pole…

All my Santas are as different as apples and oranges.

My Santas are watching over all the Christmas festivities.
