CREATIVE RESEARCH RESIDENCY

ADELAIDE AUSTRALIA

26 OCTOBER – 6 NOVEMBER 2015

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

INTRODUCTION

The Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT), with partners Access2Arts (AUS), Unlimited (UK) and Watershed (UK), is calling for applications for Unfixed, a creative research residency for Australian and UK Deaf and disabled artists. Taking place in Adelaide, Australia in late-October 2015, the residency will support five artists from each country to come together to creatively respond to the project themes.

Unfixed is a creative investigation into the characterisation of bodies as ‘disabled’ and ‘abled’. A not-uncommon experience for those with impairment is compensation, which occurs when one compensates for limitation in one area with increased ability in another. Alongside this, increasing numbers of disabled people are using augmenting technologies that, rather than seeking to ‘fix’ their impairment, provide for alternative ways of experiencing the world altogether. Unfixed will explore how each of these can disrupt our understanding of disability by encouraging the participating artists to ask “if disabled people are able to access experiences and ways of being in the world that the ‘able-bodied’ are not, who exactly is disabled?”

By challenging the widely-held belief that disabled people need ‘fixing’ in this way, the participants will also critically engage with the many unquestioned assumptions underpinning life-improvement and life-extension philosophies and technologies.

As the focus of Unfixed is on creative, collaborative research the participating artists will not be expected to create new work during the residency.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Unfixed is open to applications from Australian and UK artists who live with impairment and identify as disabled.

There is no limitation with regards to the applicant’s art form practice, however applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in and commitment to collaborating with other artists in a creative research environment.

The selection panel will be comprised of representatives from the project partners. In addition to the applicant’s track record, the selection process will aim to achieve a complementary mix of practice and diversity amongst the chosen participants.

Successful applicants will be paid a fee of $1,000 (AUD) for their participation and all travel, accommodation and access costs will be covered.
