SCENARIO

Once housing has been obtained the space must be made livable. The furnishings you choose and the way you use the elements and principles of design communicate a message to the people around you. Design is the entire process used to develop an object, a room or an entire house. Any design has three basic characteristics: function or how it is to be used, construction or how it is made and aesthetics or how pleasing it looks to the eye. All must be considered to create good design. The tools of good design are the elements and principles of design. They are used to create an environment that is pleasing to the eye. Trends in decorating affect your choices, too. Things that are popular today seemed out of style only a few years ago. Also the interior will require the use of various furnishings, fabrics, equipment and finishes. Knowing how to determine quality in these items will help you select items that will satisfy your needs now and for many years to come. Over time the types of furnishings, fabrics, equipment and finishes are changed by new technology and new design trends. It is also important to be able to use communication skills to justify your design choices. This project will enable you to practice all these skills.

ACTIVTY

Use the computer to investigate current trends in design. Go to www.bhg.com and put design trends in the search box. Read about the current trends in decorating, color, and furniture. Select one of the color trends to use in your design.

Using your text, compare qualities of furnishings, fabrics, equipment and finishes. Select fabrics, furnishings and finishes that would be appropriate for your room.

Additionally, Read Chapter 18 on Selecting Household Appliances. Complete the worksheet “Selecting Household Appliances” to determine qualities to be considered when purchasing household equipment. Also visit www.energystar.gov to find out what the program is and what types of appliances are included.

Using your text as a resource, research the elements and principles of design. Then, apply what you have learned in the design of your room.

Finally justify to the class your use of design in your room by making an oral explanation of it. Make sure you can answer any questions and give valid reasons for your choices.

Using the box provided create a bedroom. Your grade will be based on how well you use the information you have been presented with in this class. In addition to having your material here on time your grade will be based on:

Ø  Efficient use of space, plan for storage and traffic patterns (Chapter 7)

Ø  Use of the elements of design – line, form, space, pattern, texture and color (Chapter 10)

Ø  Use of the principles of design – balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and harmony (Chapter 12)

Ø  Effective color scheme identified as design trend (Chapter 11)

Ø  Appropriate background material (Chapter 14)

Ø  Appropriate textile treatments (Chapter 13, 17)

Ø  Appropriate furniture styles, finishes and placement (Chapter 15 & 16)

Ø  Planned use of lighting for a room (Chapter 17)

Ø  Interior enrichment to complement the room (Chapter 17)

The more effort you make to appropriately apply this information the better your grade will be.

In addition to the box you will need the following materials:

Carpeting, linoleum, wood, or other standard flooring materials

Wallpaper, or paint, stencil border, wall paper border, for four walls.

Material for draperies and bedspread.

Wood, cardboard, or other materials to make furniture.

Pictures, plants or other accessories.

If you have trouble getting any of these supplies see me!

The scale for this box is 1 inch equals 1 foot. This scale should be used as nearly as possible throughout the entire project. Make sure you check materials against it. Then using graph paper draw a plan for your room. Do not just start cutting windows and doors without a plan. Also, plan a swatch board on a piece of cardboard showing what materials you will be using. Before you start work on your box, both the plan and the swatch board must be approved by November 23, 2005. Unless otherwise notified, this assignment is due on December 12, 2005.

You will make an oral presentation to the class justifying your choices.
