Creating Brochures in Microsoft Word

First you need to consider the layout of your document.

Take two pieces of paper, placing them one on top of the other, and fold them into 3 sections, as you would do with a brochure. Label the pages 1-6 so you know which page is the front, center, back, etc. of your brochure.

Open your pages and lay them flat. This will be your layout for placing your articles and clip art while working in Microsoft Word.

5 / 6 / 1
2 / 3 / 4

Once you understand your setup and how your pages will be ordered, you can change the orientation of your pages.

HINT: Work in the Page Layout View. View > Page Layout. This will enable you to see your graphics, etc. Also, be sure to limit your working space to 2 pages.

To change your paper orientation from portrait to landscape, select File > Page Setup.

Click on the Paper Size tab and select the Landscape option. Your paper layout will change from long to wide.

To Create a Text Box you will want to display your drawing toolbar. Select View > Toolbars > Drawing.

Your drawing toolbar will appear. Select the Text Box tool by clicking on it (it looks like a box with an “A” in it and some writing). Your pointer will change to a thin cross. Click and drag on your page to create a box. You can then type inside the box and format your text as you normally would.

To Move your Text Box, click on its edge. Your pointer will change to a cross tool with four arrows. This is your Move tool. Click and drag to move your text box.

To Resize your Text Box, click on its edge. You will see the box highlight with knobs around its corners and edges. Place you pointer on one of the knobs and it will change to a double-edged arrow. This double-edged arrow is your Resize tool. Click and drag to resize.

HINT: Moving and Resizing a Graphic is very much the same as with Text Boxes. However, graphics should be resized from the bottom right corner to maintain their proper proportions.

To Format your Text Box (add shading, change colors, lines, etc.), select your Text box and go the the Format menu > Text Box.

To Insert Clip Art, select the Insert Menu > Picture > Clip Art. You may get a message box that pops up. Just continue to click OK until you see your clip art gallery. When you find a picture you like, simply double click on it and Word will place it on your page. You will then need to move and resize your graphic appropriately.

To Format the TextWrapping on your graphic, select your graphic and go to Format > Picture (or Clip Art). The Format box will open. Click on the Wrapping Tab and choose the style wrapping you need. Ex. NONE wrapping allows you to place your graphic directly next to or on top of text. TOP and BOTTOM wrapping pushes text away from your graphic. Experiment until you find your preference.

To Save a Graphic off the Internet, right-click your mouse directly on the picture you want. A menu will appear. Slide down to Save Picture As... A Save As... box will appear. Click on the drop-down arrow in the Save In: box. Find “Grade 7 on Walsh_Ed.” Find your folder and double click on it until it pops to the top of the box. Give your picture a name that you will remember and click SAVE.

HINT: When you are ready to insert this graphic, you will need to select the Insert Menu > Picture > From File and find it in your student folder.

To Save to the Network in your student directory, select File > Save As.... When the Save As....box opens, click on the drop-down arrow in the Save In: box. Find “Grade 7 on Walsh_Ed.” Find your folder and double click on it until it pops to the top of the box. Give your brochure a file name and then click SAVE.

HINT: Once you have saved your document in your folder on the network and you know it is in the correct place, you DO NOT have to say File > Save As...again. Simply click the Disk Icon on your Standard Toolbar and this will update your work. SAVE OFTEN!

Good Luck and Have Fun!
