Create Your Own Island Project – 300 POINTS

Introduction

You have stumbled upon an uncharted island in your explorations of the ocean. Your task is to map, label, describe and name its major features, habitants and subsequent locations.

Purpose

To create an island and draw common coastal and inland features, as well as outline currents, wave activity, and animals found in specific habitats.

Materials

FULL SIZE, WHITE Poster paper – NO OTHER SIZE OR COLOR WILL BE ACCEPTED!!

Globe

Various Reference Books

Various Powerpoint Notes

Colored pencils/Markers

Procedure

1. Name your island. Include the name ON your island map paper.

2. Choose the location for your island. Label ON your island map paper the ocean and the latitude and longitude in which it is found. Make sure your latitude and longitude do not overlap an existing landmass!

3. List which currents are associated with your island. Use your Currents Map for this.

4. Decide which direction your LONGSHORE CURRENT will be traveling around your island. Draw the arrows on your map, and make sure to label it. (Remember: The direction of your current is important to some of your Island Features.)

5. DRAW & LABEL correctlyeach of your island’s 20 features. Remember certain features are only found with other features. (Example: A sea arch is not going to be found without a cliff.) Also make sure you put the features together with the correct type of coastline. (Example: A delta will not be found on a rocky coastline with cliffs and sea caves.)

6. Color the island, its features, and the surrounding ocean with colored pencils/crayons. You can outline and label in marker if you wish, but the coloring portion has to be done with colored pencils/crayons.

7. Feel free to add additional features (marsh, mountain, volcano, etc).

8. Research animals found in the following 3 habitats: Rocky Shoreline, Beach Coast, and Barrier Island.

9. On the back of your poster board you will DRAW, COLOR, NAME and DESCRIBE5 animals from each of the 3 above habitats.
