Create a Gilded Age walking tour!

Groups of 4-5. Reminder: This will count as a project grade, it will be worth up to 40 points. You will receive a Group Grade.

Power Point must be on a flash drive – must make sure BEFORE due date that it is compatible with school computer (…may need to save as power point 97).

Late Projects not accepted.

In each neighborhood you have to visit 1-2 sites that reflect the values of the Gilded Age.

1. BIG BUSINESS

•The Financial Center (Wall Street/Banks/Federal Hall/NYSE – And for immigration: Brooklyn Bridge/Tammany Hall)

2. IMMIGRATION

•The Lower East Side (Tenement Museum/The Pickle Guys/Katz’s Diner/Bloody Angle – Tea Houses there/Yonah Schimmel (best old fashioned knish!!!!)/China Town/Orthodox Church/Synagogues/Little Italy/Ferrara’s Bakery)Now is your chance to get good food! Plan accordingly!

3. TECHNOLOGY

•Midtown (Grand Central Station, Flat Iron Building, Empire State Building, Central Park)

4. CULTURE (Education/Art/Literature)

•Museum Mile (5th Avenue museums – the Met, Frick Museum, Guggenheim)

•Rockefeller Center (may be fun if you are going over the holidays!), Carnegie Hall

5. YOUR OWN!

•One other neighborhood of your choice that fills into one of the categories above (somewhere in Brooklyn/Queens/Harlem) that reflects the values of the Gilded Age

(Green-Wood Cemetery, Coney Island, historic places in Gravesend (there are many), etc)

N.B. Label slides clearly so I know which part you are using it for!

Make a power point presentation of your tour – make sure to include a MAP of where you went.

Make 3 informative slides for each neighborhood about the relevant historical information of each location. Your slides should include details with specific dates, persons, and anecdotes that you’ve researched; add relevant PRIMARY SOURCE quotes/document excerpts. Do not regurgitate encyclopedia information! No copying and pasting off of the Internet.

Make an extra slide at the end of the whole presentations with the bibliography of sources you used, MLA format.

Includephotos of yourselves in the locations.Take a photo of your group in the location that shows a “snap shot” of Gilded Life. Feel free to dress the part!

Have a slide with all of your group member names (can be from any APUSH class).

PART II Pick TWO of the following activities to go with your Power Point!!!

Write a song/poem that embodies the Gilded values of the neighborhood. Bonus points if you make it a video.

Theatrical video of you guys acting out a Gilded Age experience.

Write a 2-paragraph review of ONE museum and how it reflects the values of theGilded Age (architecturally or an exhibit – cite examples).

Sketch an image, create a collage, or make a sculpture - reflecting an aspect of this location that exemplifies the Gilded Age.
