Create a Data Management Plan (DMP) using DMPOnline

DMPOnlineis an online tool to enable you to build and edit DMPs according to the requirements stipulated by the major UK and international funders. To create a DMP using the tool,

  1. Go to DMPOnline [
  2. If you use DMPOnline for the first time, you will need to sign up for a free account. Please use your University of Birmingham email address and select ‘University of Birmingham’ as your organisation when doing so. Once registered, you’ll be able to sign in by clicking on “sign in with your institutional credentials”and using your UoB login details.
  3. To start a new DMP, click on the “Create plan” tab in the top menu.

If you’re funded by a research council or other research funder, / If you’re not funded by any of the funders listed in the drop down menu,
  1. Select your funder from the drop down menu. This selection will provide you with a template tailored to the DMP requirements of your funder and funder specific guidance if available.
  1. Select “University of Birmingham” as your organisation to see guidance from the University of Birmingham. It is recommended to also display the DCC guidance (by ticking the box under ‘additional guidance’) as it will provide helpful questions to consider when answering questions and links to helpful external resources. Click “create your plan”.
/ 4. Instead of choosing a funder from the drop down menu, click ‘Not applicable/not listed’.
5. Select “University of Birmingham” as your organisation to get to the short University of Birmingham template and see University specific guidance. It is recommended to also display the DCC guidance (by ticking the box under ‘additional guidance’) as it will provide helpful questions to consider when answering questions and links to helpful external resources. Click “create your plan”.
  1. Start filling your DMP template. You can save a draft any time and return later to complete it. You can also share your plan with colleagues. Three levels of permissions are available:

-Co-ownership allows colleagues to edit details and control access,

-Editors can contribute content to the plans,

-Plans can be shared in read-only mode.

  1. If you have trouble answering certain questions in your DMP, please contact for help. We can also review your DMP and provide additional input.
  2. Once your plan is finished, you can export it in various formats to include it in your grant application or submit it to your funder.
