The Comic Strip

Create a comic strip using the information found in the article.

1. Form groups of 6. Each person is responsible for his or her own part in the strip.
2. Create avatars for the characters of good ozone, bad ozone, and a superhero to save the day. You can have two people design one so you have two to choose from. After 10 minutes, put the avatars in the center of the table and select 1 of each to use in the story.
3. Give your avatars names that will reflect their roles in nature. Keep them decent!
4. Give each person in the group one of the following parts:
5. What is happening to the good ozone layer?
6. How does the depletion of good ozone deplete human health and environment?
7. What is being done about the depletion of the good ozone?
8. What causes bad ozone?
9. How does bad ozone affect human health and the environment?
10. What is being done about bad ozone?
11. When prompted by the teacher each person will draw a picture or write a summary of their part using their avatars in the box containing their letter. People writing summaries will use the avatars instead of the character’s name. Three people should write summaries and three should draw the scene.
12. Reseat yourselves so you are lined up A-F, in order.
13. After a specified time limit, the teacher will say pass and you pass the papers one person to the right. Add your part to the correct box, and then pass it to the next person.
14. When all the papers are done, read them aloud and share pictures. Chose the one you think is best.
15. Cut out the introduction and the boxes. Paste them on a poster board.
16. Present your stories to the class.

I am ozone. I protect the Earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Because of me the Earth’s surface and all life on it doesn’t burn up. But those pesky humans have really made my job tough. Because of their pollution, the air closest to the ground, called the troposphere, is filled with bad ozone that makes people sick and can even kill them. I live way up in the atmosphere in a layer called the stratosphere. I do my job the best I can, but the bad pollution leaks up to my level and causes holes to form in my layer. Because of that the Earth is getting hotter, living things are becoming extinct, and climate is changing. So now, I must fight, not only to protect Earth from harmful rays, but also to defeat the evil ozone that lives down by the ground. The battle begins. Bring it on!
