OVERVIEW
TheCrawfordFundencouragesgreaterrecognitionoftheimportanceofinternationalagriculturalresearchanddevelopmenttoAustraliabyactivelyengagingininternationalagriculturalresearch.TheTasmanianCommitteeoftheCrawfordFundoffers asmallnumberofcompetitivetravelawardsfortertiarystudents.Thepurposeoftheawardsistofacilitateactivestudentparticipationininternationalagriculturalprojects,inordertohelpthemgainvaluableexperienceandexpertiseindevelopingcountries. Only one or two awards will be made each year.
TheawardsareopentoHonoursandPostgraduateStudents from Tasmania, with priority given to Australian nationals and permanent residents.Applicantsshouldbe engagedinarelevantbiophysicalorsocio‐economicaspectofagriculture,animalproduction,fisheries,forestry,naturalresourcemanagementorfoodsecurity.ApplicantsshouldbeenrolledeitheratHonoursLevel,orinapostgraduatedegree(MastersorPhD).Theawardtakestheformofabursarytoamaximumvalueof$3000perawardee,andcanbeusedforairfares,othertravelcosts,accommodationandsubsistence,and/oroperationalresearchcosts.
TheCrawfordFundStudentInternationalAgriculturalAwardsaredesignedtoaugmentfundingfromothersources—forexample,agriculturalresearchanddevelopmentassistanceprojectsbeingundertakeninoverseascountrieswherethestudentsintendtoworkandgainexperience.Theprojectsthatthestudentsplantolinkwithcanbegovernmental(e.g.ACIAR,FAO),non‐governmental(NGO),commercial(e.g.seedorR&Dcompany)orinassociationwithauniversity.Fundingtoattendresearchconferencesoverseaswillnotbeconsidered,unlessitcontributestopromotinginternationalagriculturalresearchindevelopingcountries.
HOWTOAPPLY
ApplicantsneedtocompleteanapplicationformandoutlinethebenefitsexpectedfromtheCrawfordFundStudentInternationalAgriculturalAward.ThebenefitsoftheawardcouldbethroughstrongerlinkagesinresearchareasofinteresttoTasmanianindustry;understandingtheapplicationoftechnicalknowledgetodifferentagriculturalsystems;orknowledgethatwillhelpfosterTasmania-developingcountrycommercialengagement.Proposalswillonlybeconsiderediftheyincludeasignedstatementofapprovalfromtheagency(university,government,NGOorcompany) where the student is based.Itisexpectedthatthesuccessfulapplicantswillbeamenabletoinvolvementinpublicawarenessactivitiesassociatedwiththe award.Awardeesare required to provideawrittenreporttotheTasmanianCrawfordCommitteedescribingwhattheylearnedduringtheirCrawfordFundStudentInternationalAgriculturalResearchAwardactivities.

1 / The applicantApplicantsmust be enrolledat a recognisedTasmanian tertiaryinstitutein a relevantdisciplinaryarea inagriculture,animalproduction,fisheries,forestry, naturalresourcemanagementorfoodsecurity.

Theprojectthat theapplicant proposes to link to can be governmental(e.g.ACIAR, FAO),non‐governmental(NGO), commercial (e.g. seedcompany), oruniversitybased.
Provide detailsoftheinternationalagricultural researchprojector activitythat you plan to linkwith(whoisconducting it, whois fundingit, whereit is based,whatare itsmainobjectives) and how you plan to link the proposed activity with the project.
Funding to attendresearchworkshops overseas will not be considered unless there is a strongcasethatthefocusof the workshopitself aims to promoteinternationalagriculturalresearch.

While thisinternationalagricultureinitiativeisdesignedtoassist the hostcountry whereitisconducted,projects needto be ofmutualbenefit toTasmania, as well as ofbenefit to the applicant.Proposalsthatcan clearlydemonstratebenefit toTasmania(e.g. throughstrongerlinkagesinresearch areasofinteresttoTasmanianindustry,access to technicalknowledge oflocalinterest, understandingtheapplication oftechnical knowledge to differentagriculturalsystems,orknowledge thatwill helpfosterTasmania–developing country commercial engagement) willhave anadvantage.
4 / Budget
TheCrawfordFundStudent InternationalResearch Awards canbe used forairfaresand other travel costs,accommodationandsubsistence, and/or operationalresearchcosts, to a maximum totalvalue of $3000 perawardee.The finalpaymentof$500will be helduntilreceiptof the agreedreport bythe CrawfordFund.
TheCrawfordFundsupportisdesigned to augmentsupportfromothersources.Provide briefdetails ofcashand in‐kindsupportavailablefrom other sources to support the proposaldescribedin Section 3.

Approvals arerequired fromAuthorisedOfficersrepresenting boththeHostUniversitywhere theapplicantis enrolled,and the Host CountryProjector Activity withwhich theapplicantproposestolink.
Theproposalshould include comprehensivedetailsof OHS(OperationalHealthand Safety) plans and thesupport beingprovided by theHostInstitute(e.g.university)ortheHost CountryProject orActivity.Pleaseindicate ifthis includes insurance cover.
