Introduction and Expectations

1.  Structure of the Course

The course is based around core topics, Data Analysis and Financial Maths. There are 4 optional Modules of which we complete 2. These are:

a) Matrices

b) Geometry and Trigonometry

2.  Assessing the Course

Assessment is in 2 parts.

a)  School based SAC’s which total 34% of the final mark.

b)  Two exams which total 66% of the final mark.

The types of SAC’s completed in Mathematics include an application and analysis style task which will be split into 3 stages and will be completed over 3 periods and SAC’s which are all 1 period tasks that will be in two sections Multiple choice and Application.

3.  Pass or Fail

PASS or FAIL in the subject is judged on whether you can fulfil the OUTOMES of the course.

The award of satisfactory completion for a unit is based on a decision that the student has demonstrated achievement of the set of outcomes specified for the unit. This decision will be based on the teacher’s assessment of the student’s overall performance on assessment tasks designated for the unit.

Assessment tasks must be a part of the regular teaching and learning program. They must be completed mainly in class and within a limited timeframe.

4.  In Class

In class you will need for every period; your Casio Classpad calculator, 2 workbooks (one of them will be your bound reference) and textbook

5.  Specifications for bound reference

-  The bound reference must be in book format of A4 size or smaller when closed.

-  It must have a single horizontal or vertical spine.

-  Pages must be permanently bound and securely attached to the spine.

-  The number of pages is not specified

-  The bound reference may be:

Ø  A textbook

Ø  A securely bound lecture pad

Ø  A permanently bound student-constructed set of notes without foldouts

Ø  An exercise book with cloth, glue or staple binding

Students are allowed to.

-  Annotate the material

-  Design their own written index

-  Fold pages

-  Cut page corners

-  Colour code pages

-  Insert dividers into their own sets of notes

-  Firmly attach (for example, by glue, adhesive tape or staples) additional material to pages in the bound reference.

The following are prohibited:

-  Pages or parts of pages can be detached from the bound reference during the examination

-  Fold-outs, maps or brochure style components

-  Removable tabs, post it notes or other items designed to be detached

-  Forms of collation/binding that are designed to be non-permanent and the content modified by insertion including:

Ø  Ring-binder folders

Ø  Plastic A4 sleeves (permanent or removable) from which pages may be removed

Ø  Manila and similar folders with clip, clamp, slide and metal prongs style binding of loose-leaf material.

If any page is detached from the rest of the bound reference, the page will be removed by the supervisor for the duration of the examination and the incident will be reported as a potential breach of rules.

6.  Orientation work.

We will briefly spend some time checking this work but it is essential that you complete them. The first few questions in the exam are always on this section. Below is a copy of the work program for Chapter 1 Univariate Data.
