CPR: Procedure for College Students

1. ASSESS – Check for unresponsiveness (gently shake, poke or loudly call out to victim) if no response, call 911 immediately. If there is a suspicion of back injury, DO NOT touch/move victim and wait for first responders.

2. OPEN AIRWAY - Tilt the head back and check for breathing.

3. Check Breathing – Put ear next to nose while looking at victim’s chest for 5 seconds (will rise & lower if breathing).

4. Prepare – Pinch nose and cover victim’s mouth with yours (or with CPR mask)

5. Begin Rescue Breathes – Take a deep breath to fill your lungs with air, blow steadily into the mouth until the chest rises. Maintaining head tilt and chin lift, take your mouth away and watch the chest fall. Give two effective breaths. Look, listen and feel for signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or movement. (If the victim is still not breathing normally, coughing or moving, begin chest compressions).

6. Chest Compression - To be effective the chest must depress at least 1.5 to 2 inches. Press down on the chest on a line running from nipple to nipple, in the center of the chest. Place hand over hand with fingers interlocked and press down with the heel of the lower palm. Pump 30 times making sure chest rises before next compression.

7. Continue - Two breaths and 30 compressions

8. Recovery Position – Once victim is breathing normally, kneel on left side of him/her. Straighten the legs and place the left arm outward at a 90 degree angle palm up. Now get the right arm and place it across victim’s chest palm on left shoulder.

9. Recovery Position cont’d – Roll victim onto left side, placing left cheek on right hand (make sure you maintain open airway). Bend upper leg so it is in a 90 degree angle. Monitor vitals until first responders arrive.
