Reports and Announcements

Treasurers—had $38 + $132 (O’Rourke) in expenses in month, $2339.19 left in checking.

Council of Commissioners The City is thinking about buying the Big Butte. Health dept. reviewed recent actions of community enhancement ordinance at a recent meeting and the commissioners were very supportive; CE group will start meeting again next week. Their budget is not clear, not really known by us where is money coming from and where is it all going to? Is historic status ever incorporated? Could historic preservation commission be involved in their decisions for enforcement’s?

URA-- Merdi/MSE got a large grant for the Thorton; no money for new applications. Glen Bodish should resubmit application for roof on Main St. Arts building anyway.

Main St. Uptown – Additional headframe lighting is being discussed. Many people are hoping to light more frames; members disagreed on using red lights for all of them; meeting 10 or 11AM Thursday Feb 12 at the Uptown Café.

Committee Reports

Education—

Website – Kelly showed two possible versions of the webpage. Dick Gibson has done a nice job with the graphics! Marissa Newman at McLeod offered to provide information about of each building in the Historic District that is currently for sale. Ellen Crain will provide links for information on history of buildings; Mark offered that there is a district-wide need for digitizing the inventory. Kevin Bone at BSB may be useful for getting GIS data from the building department.

Advertising— We are pursuing advertising Butte nationally for arts and summertime retirements homes. Pam Haxby-Cote is thinking about formalizing marketing and how to handle county-owned properties. We would like to see writing of articles about Butte buildings in various magazines and newspapers.

Writing—need to write articles for local magazines, promoting butte. Kay Eccelston’s class will use this as a writing assignment. Leslie Dickerson will act as a liaison with the MT Standard to see about getting some of the writing published.

Workshop for Landlords – Will be held April 24 with a panel of experts, brief presentations, and questions. Plan to advertise in Montana Landlords Assoc.

Building Improvement Fund—We will meet and update application forms. Need to advertise; Casey Wornath sent in a revised version of his plans for his 2003 grant, we need to get back with him and approve his changes—we still need more information from him as to finish on the porch. Subcommittee will meet Wed. 25 Feb at 6:30 PM

O&O -- March 9 Rolene will meet with Mark about starting to draft wording that will satisfy the State Historic Preservation Office about Butte’s non-compliance, it will be 1:30 PM at the RTI conference room.

O’Rourke -- The Texas partners do not want to be involved with preservation. Carol will talk again to Rick Orizotti again about whether the partners will work on ownership. Need to fill out application for National Trust looking for a structural engineer. We’ll need an estimate. Need to contact the Nat Trust, look for approved engineers that have done this work before, and make sure that it can meet the UBC for preservation.
