CPD Short Course in the Management of
Really Sick Patients with Anorexia Nervosa
Course Overview
The MARSIPAN consultation group was established in 2008 as a result of a concerning number of deaths of patients admitted to hospital suffering from Anorexia Nervosa. Some patients had been overfed, and suffered the Refeeding Syndrome, others had been underfed, a new condition that we have called the Underfeeding Syndrome.
The MARSIPAN guidance¹was published in October 2010 (revised in 2014) and junior MARSIPAN² followed in March 2012. They were written for clinical staff who encounter patients with severe anorexia nervosa in hospital settings, and in the community when they clearly need to be admitted. This course is designed to help clinicians meet and overcome the enormous challenges these situations present and so reduce the deaths in hospital of patients, often young, with very severe eating disorders. The course covers assessment and treatment of adults and children. The lecturers are experts in eating disorders and nutrition, and most were co-authors on the guidance documents.
