Academy Lecture Reflection
In this lecture, Katherine Bassard gave us good information on how to enhance our leadership skills, and grow as a person no matter what type of diversity we are facing. She talked about many different leadership qualities and duties and portrayed to us how to be good role models for others in our school and community. She told us that true leaders have vision and voice in their positions.
Bassard pointed out that great leaders have vision for themselves and those they are leading. This made me realize that a good leader should be able to see things that others cannot see and have a goal they desire to reach. They should be able to see the gaps in society, the problems that need to be addressed, and the ways to address them. This vision correlates with the goals that they want to reach. A leader should have the ability to turn the things that they see into a plan and drive to accomplish this goal of theirs.Bassard also said that as leaders, we should expect to encounter obstacles. However, we should not let these obstacles hinder or discourage us. We should be able to learn from our circumstances and mistakes and use them to grow in our leadership skills and spiritual life.
Another thing that I took away from this lecture is that I should allow God to lead me in leading other people. He should become the foundation of my leadership approach and the one I lean on for support. After all, God is the one who gave me the ability to be a strong leader in the first place. If I put God as the center of my leadership style and approach, then I am tying my personal values and integrity into my actions. This is easily seen by others and can have a large impact on the way people view me in a leadership role.
I plan to take this information and apply it to what I am doing when I lead others. I will try and be more enthusiastic, positive, and confident with problems and/or obstacles I will face as a leader. I will also try to put more trust on God and remember that he is there for me no matter what. I have a tendency to try and do everything on my own and not ask for help so relying on God to lead me in the right direction as I lead others will be a difficult but worthwhile task. I am hoping that the information and motivation I received from this lecture will enable me to lead and inspire others the same way Katherine Bassard has.
