Court proceedings suspended in Elbert County

All functions temporarily moved to DouglasCountyJusticeCenter

The detection of mold in the ElbertCountyJusticeCenteris necessitating that officials make emergencyarrangements for meeting the needs of the community. Mold was discovered in the building earlier this week and further inspection today yielded additional occurrences. Remediation will need to take place to eradicate the mold in these areas.

“All court and probation business has been suspended at the ElbertCountyJusticeCenter due to the discovery of mold recontamination in the building,” says Karen Salaz, office of the state court administrator. “We will be conducting further tests, continue to monitor the building and review the situation as more information becomes available.”

Please reference the following information if you need to conduct businessnow through Jan. 27, 2006. Updated information will be distributed as it becomes available:

  1. Beginning today, Jan. 12, 2006, all persons needing to conduct business with the courts must do so at the DouglasCountyJusticeCenter, 4000 Justice Way in Castle Rock. No court services will be available in Kiowa.
  2. An ElbertCounty court clerk will be available in the Douglas County Courthouseto respond to public questions and inquiries for information from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Infractions and other fines may be paid at the Douglas County Combined Court Clerk’s Office. ElbertCounty files for review will not be available in this location.
  3. All court proceedings scheduled for the weeks of Jan. 17-27, 2006,have been moved to the DouglasCountyJusticeCenter.
  4. Mandatory e-filing,which began Jan. 1, 2006, for all district court civil and probate cases filed in Elbert County Combined Court will be subject to mandatory electronic case filing and service. ( This will expedite processing of ElbertCounty documents during this transitional phase.
  5. Probation business will be conducted out of the DouglasCountyJusticeCenter until further notice. Please call the main number with any questions. 303-814-7170.

The above arrangements will remain in place until other alternatives can be secured while extent of the contamination and recommended remediation can be determined.
