Course Objectives/Description:

The purpose of this course is to provide students an introduction of Calculus. The emphasis of this course is to prepare students for college Calculus and the AP Calculus Test. A graphing calculator (any TI-83 or TI-84 model) is required.

Assessment and Grading Policy:

Your final grade for the semester will be calculated with the following weights.

  • Homework/Classwork – 20%
  • It will consist of problems very similar to AP style questions and this will be graded for accuracy as well as completion.
  • Assessments – 80%
  • Tests will be given at the end of each unit and will each be worth 100 or 200 points.
  • Quizzes will be given periodically 20 – 50 points.
  • Each unit’s videonotes will be checked on the day of the unit test and will count for 5% of the test grade.
  • Your final exam will count as 10% of all grades.

Supplies:

Students must bring the following every day to class:

  1. A pencil.
  2. Calculus of a Single Variable, 9th Edition
  3. Fast track to a 5: Preparing for the Advanced Placement* Calculus AB and BC Examinations (Second Semester)
  4. Spiral Notebook (I suggest a 3 subject or larger.)
  5. Folder for any graded papers or loose papers. (may be in the notebook)
  6. Calculator – GRAPHING CALCULATORS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENTS (TI-83 or higher)

Behavior Expectations:

  • Students will come prepared for class. This includes the textbook, writing utensils, calculators, engineering paper, and any other tools recommended by the instructor.
  • Students come to class on time and ready for warm-ups.
  • The teacher, not the bell, dismisses class. This is done only after the room is put back in order (desks, trash, etc.)
  • No cell phones and no mp3 players of any kind (iPod, etc.) at any time while in the classroom.
  • Dress code and other expectations spelled out in the Conduct Code book are observed and followed.
  • Always have RESPECT for yourself and one another. In doing this, you will be in compliance with all school and district policies.

Classroom Policies:

  • Attendance - Attendance is crucial to understanding the material presented in this course. Missing a block day is the equivalent to missing two traditional days, so the work load of a block day will likely surpass a traditional day. If a student has an excused absence, he/she has two calendar days per day excused to makeup the material for full credit. After the two days, the work is considered late. Tardiness is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. A tardy may result in a 1 participation point deduction for each offense, and after 6tardies, parents will be called and a detention will be issued – this is dependent on your student’s specific instructor and his /her classroom policies.
  • Keeping informed - I will post your grades on Campus weekly (they will typically be updated at the beginning of each week). Therefore it is the responsibility of the student (and parent) to check these grades on a regular basis. There should be no misunderstanding or surprises of your performance in my class. If you have any questions about your grade, or notice a mistake, please contact me ASAP to rectify the situation. Also, continue to check my website for announcements.
  • Text Books -Textbook is Calculus of a Single Variable, 9th Edition.

THE BIGGEST KEY TO SUCCESS IN ANY MATH COURSE IS TAKING GOOD NOTES AND COMPLETING ALL HOMEWORK!!!
