Grades will be issued at the end of the first and second semester. Progress reports will be mailed home at the end of 6 and 12 weeks. Parents and students are encouraged to follow progress on Powerschool. Visit the district webpage to learn more about how to access your account.

Course Description:

Reading comprehension- Students will be reading a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction and working on basic literacy skills, vocabulary development, reading strategies, and test preparation.

Writing focuses on helping the students to become more proficient writers. Students will be working on skills in writing sentences, paragraphs, using punctuation, editing, and spelling. They will be developing basic and advanced skills in writing persuasive, narrative, and, expository essays.

Course Expectations:

Students will come prepared and participate actively in class.

Course Standards:

Targeted standards will be determined on an individual student basis and informed by individualized education programs. Students can also be scored on their knowledge and skill on the standards expected for the course or based their individual education plans.

5 / Mastery: Superior academic performance through evidence of in-depth understanding and demonstration of skill/standard.
4 / Approaching Mastery: Consistently meets and sometimes exceeds the basic skill/standard and has a complete understanding, and can demonstrate the skill/standard.
3 / Proficient: Meets the standard with basic knowledge and demonstration. Some errors may be present.
2 / Working Toward Proficient: Not yet passing. Occasional demonstration of skill/standard.
1 / Not Proficient/Insufficient Evidence: Limited achievement of the grade level standards/expectations. Proficiency cannot be determined due to missing assignments, and/or length of time in school.

Grading Criteria:

80% learning target assessments

20% practice/ work habits

Academic grades will reflect a student’s individual education plan or mastery of the subject’s knowledge and skills according to state standards. Extra credit will not be provided.

C Proficient

F Not proficient

Late Work or Missing Work:

Students must complete assignments and submit them to the teacher in order to demonstrate that they are working toward proficiency.

Reassessment:

Students may be given opportunities to retake assessments they fail, or wish to retake, in order to demonstrate proficiency, provided that they are making adequate progress toward proficiency.
