Course Description:

English II during spring semester of 2017 will consist largely of a science research project unit in collaboration with Mrs. Elkins. Besides the large research unit, there will be other assignments focused on improving skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Throughout the course of the research project unit and other reading and writing units, students will develop and improve these necessary communication skills.

Course Objectives:

Gain proficiency in writing arguments, reading critically and analytically, finding and applying textual evidence in essay writing, and becoming a better researcher.

January, February, and March: Science Research Project

April and May: World Literature and Writing (Literature and Article Readings and Lit Circle Books)

Evaluation Procedures and Grading Criteria:

The purpose of an assignment is to offer formative feedback and to give students practice in achieving learning targets. Below is the grading scale that will be used on every assignment.

Grading Scale:

A 100-93

B 92-86
C 85-77
D 76-70

F 69-0

Students and parents can access grades on PowerSchool.

Each student’s grade will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Homework (Reading, Writing, Outside Research)
  • Group or individual class activities
  • Reading or Writing Responses, Journals
  • Assignment Checks (Grammar IXL)
  • Quizzes
  • Exams
  • Essays

Attendance Statement:

If you know you are going to be gone or absent from class, please make arrangements to get your assignments ahead of time. If you are gone, it is your responsibility to retrieve and understand your assignments from the weekly schedule. Upon returning to class, the student will develop a plan with the teacher to make sure to stay on track. All work assigned by the teacher should be completed in a timely fashion.

Make-up Policy:

Students will be allowed to receive full credit on assignments missed in class if due to medical or unforeseen circumstances.

Each day an assignment is missing and not turned in after its due date, the assignment’s grade will be reduced by a letter grade. (Ex: If an assignment would have been an A on the due date, it would instead receive a B if it was a day late.)

  • Bring all needed materials to class every day
  • Be in your seat and ready to go when the bell rings

  • Keep electronic devices silent and put away when not needed in class
