Course Objective:

To develop the basic tools to evaluate and manage at risk pregnancies with specific regard to:

  1. Prenatal diagnosis and imaging
  2. Understanding of embryology and fetal growth and development
  3. Understanding of genetics as related to prenatal diagnosis
  4. Maternal hypertensive disorders
  5. Diabetes complicating pregnancy
  6. Inpatient and ambulatory management of at risk pregnancies
  7. Maternal and Fetal Physiology, including anatomic adaptations to pregnancy

Course Schedule: Varies, but generally

M-FAntepartum rounds at 8 a.m.

WGrand Rounds 7:00 a.m.

M-ThHigh Risk Obstetrical Clinics in a.m.

FGYN Perinatal Rounds NOON

Prenatal diagnosis and imaging as per faculty assignment

Other assignments as per faculty and chief residents

Lecture Friday pm with Ob/Gyn Residents

  1. To understand the rationale and techniques to screen for and diagnose congenital anomalies and aneuploidy prenatally.
  2. To understand the impact of diabetes mellitus on pregnancy.
  3. To understand the impact of hypertensive disorders on pregnancy.
  4. To develop the skills to screen for, diagnose, and provide initial management of for commonly encountered pregnancy complications including:
  5. Premature rupture of membranes
  6. Preterm labor

  5. Women’s Health Services Clinics

Hours:

Vary, but usually M-F 6:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Evaluation:

By MFM and Generalist Faculty upon completion of elective utilizing MUSOM 4th year elective evaluation device

Reading:

As per assignment by faculty and Chief Residents

Specific reading assignments will be basis for written examination.

GRADING POLICY:

This course will be graded as “Pass/Fail.”

To pass you must have the following:

  • Passing grade from the course director evaluation.

PLUS

  • Passing grad from all clinical faculty evaluations

PLUS

  • Score at least 80% on the MCQ

The course director’s evaluation will be based, but not limited to, upon the following factors:

  • Attendance and participation in assigned activities
  • Demonstration of knowledge and skills
  • Maturity and Professionalism
  • Oral Case presentation/patient workup
  • Informal oral case discussions and presentations
  • Self-directed learning

MCQ Grading Scale

>90=A

80-89=B

70-79=C

<70%=F

Students receiving a grade of <80% on MCQ will be given the opportunity to retake a similar examination. Average of 2 MCQ examinations will be used to determine final grade.
