Course Title: Algebra IIIInstructor: Mr. G. PorterEmail:
Grade Level: 12thgradeRoom: 219 main
Course Description:
This course is designed for students who earned at least a ―C in Algebra II who plan to attend college. In preparation for college math, students will work with linear and quadratic functions, polynomial functions, inequalities, exponents and logarithms. The second semester of the course will also include the study of several basic trigonometry concepts This course is designed to teach the fundamental concepts and skills necessary for students to succeed in College Algebra, Calculus, and in other disciplines which are mathematically based, such as Chemistry and Physics.
Outcomes:
Students will know basic concepts and demonstrate advancedmathematical techniques in the following areas:
- Demonstrate skill in the fundamental properties of algebra.
- Demonstrate skill in solving various degrees of algebraic equations.
- Demonstrate skill in the applications of properties of logarithms.
- Demonstrate skill in the applications of trigonometric properties, definitions, identities, and the graphs of functions.
- Demonstrate skill in the use and application of graphs of lines and conic sections.
- Demonstrate skill in analytic geometry.
- Demonstrate skill in the use of matrices and determinates in solving linear systems.
- Demonstrate skill in the probability of a single outcome and multiple outcomes.
- Demonstrate skill in the solving of exponential and logarithmic equations.
- Demonstrate skill in the use and understanding of notations for summations, permutations, combinations, inverse trigonometric functions, and logarithmic forms.
- Demonstrate skill in setting up and solving various types of problems.
The problems that we will deal with will be more of the advanced concepts that are not just one - step or two - step solutions. The emphasis on fundamental word problems will provide the foundation necessary to prepare students for success in college level courses.
Classroom Policies:
- Daily homework will be assigned.
- Homework is due the day after it is assigned. Unexcused late homework will not be accepted. Finishing work on time is part of the grade of Homework. Occasionally there will be some class time for homework (Called independent practice.) The students should take advantage of this time as the instructor may be able to apply a differentiated instruction technique to aid in the learning process of the individual student.
- Homework is evaluated on a participation basis meaning that credit is given as long as the student completes every problem (on time) whether the answers are correct or incorrect. We will go over all homework assignments the day they are due to allow for corrections to be made on every problem.
- A test will follow every 8-9 lessons. Tests are to be completed during 1 sitting!
- No extra time will be given to complete unfinished tests. Finishing in the allotted time is part of the grade. Tests will be given back to the students and should be kept in a folder to use as an aid in preparing for future tests. If Absent on Test day, Students must make up the test outside of class time. Either before school, after school or possibly during Study Hall time. Please set the make up session with the teacher when you return from the absence.
- A comprehensive semester exam will be given each semester.
- Students will need a scientific calculator.
- Any evidence of communicating during an exam will result in a zerofor that exam which can have a major effect on the final grade.
- All policies in the student handbook will be followed.
- Be punctual – by being in your seat when the bell rings.
- Be prepared – by coming to class with all books and materials needed for the hour (pencil, book, homework assignment, etc.).
- Be respectful – with your words and your actions to everyone in and all of those who enter the classroom. Use appropriate language, manners, and behavior at all times.
Materials:
- Loose leaf paper for daily assignments/notes
- Pencil
- Scientific Calculator (sin,cos,tan functions)
- Graphing Calculator would also be beneficial
- Graph paper - Red ink pens (for grading)
Instructional Methods
Lecture, demonstration, class discussion and note taking
Hands-on applications
Group work and activities
Board work and worksheets
Possible computer activities
Phonesmay only be used in class during “individual working time” with permission from teacher. That means during your individual practice time, not when a teacher or another student is presenting to the class. Phones will absolutely not be seen during testing. The use of them is a privilege and can be taken away.
