  1. TITLE: Football and Basketball Officiating
  1. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Football and basketball rules and theories of officiating.
  1. PURPOSE: To develop an understanding of the rules and officiating theories of football and basketball for coaches, officials, and spectators of these sports.
  1. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course students will:
  2. Have a moderately in-depth understanding of the rules of football and basketball.
  3. Understand the concept of preventive officiating.
  4. Understand the theories of officiating that dictate the manner in which game rules are applied in officiating football and basketball in the public schools.
  1. CONTENT OUTLINE:

Football rules and theories of officiating will be covered in the first half of the course, with basketball being covered in the second half. Chapters (Rules) will be assigned weekly, although not necessarily in the order that they appear in the rule books.

  1. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

Lecture/discussion with supplemental PowerPoint presentations will be primarily utilized in the course.

  1. FIELD, CLINICAL, AND/OR LABORATORY EXPERIENCES: none
  1. RESOURCES:

  1. GRADING PROCEDURES:

Football Final Examination10%-40%

Basketball Final Examination10%-40%

Weekly Football Quizzes10%-30%

Weekly Basketball Quizzes10%-30%

Class Participation (Attendance)10%

Grading Scale:

A = 90+

B = 80 - 89%

C = 70 - 79%

D = 60 - 69%

E = less than 60%

Examinations: Two written examinations will be given during the course, one over football rules, the other over basketball rules. Students may pre-determine the grading emphasis for each exam, ranging from 10 to 40% of the final course grade. Students must declare in writing (form provided) prior to the end of the third week’s class the percentage to be used for each exam. Any student failing to specify this percentage will by default receive an assigned percentage of 25% for each examination.

Chapter Quizzes: A short quiz will be given both at the beginning and at the end of each class period after the first, except on dates of scheduled examinations. Quizzes will consist of 10-20 true-false questions over the rules to be covered during the class period (beginning quiz) and over the rules covered during the previous class (ending quiz). The two lowest football quiz grades (one beginning quiz and one ending quiz) will be dropped, as well as the two lowest basketball quiz grades (same arrangement). The quiz grade for each sport will be the average of the quiz grades for that sport after dropping the two lowest scores. Like for regular examinations, each student may pre-determine the percentage of the total grade to be derived from each sport’s quiz grade, ranging from 10-30%. The default percentage of 20% will be assigned in cases where the student fails to specify.

Being absent (or late, since quizzes are administered at the beginning of the class period, or leaving early, in case of ending quizzes) will result in a zero grade for missed quizzes. Students arriving late while the quiz is in progress may not be given time to complete all questions. Please be on time for all classes. Make-up quizzes will not be given.

Class Participation: Ten percent of the student's grade will come from class participation (attendance). One absence will not affect the participation grade, but each additional absence will result in a 5% deduction. Arriving more than 30 minutes late or leaving more than 30 minutes early will result in an absence being recorded. In other words, you may miss one class meeting without penalty. To miss more than one time will result in lost points on the grade. Excused absences will not be counted against the class participation grade.

  1. ATTENDANCE POLICY:

This course adheres to the attendance policy published in the current MSU Undergraduate Bulletin. Roll will be taken each class meeting. Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Under no circumstances shall a student miss more than three class meetings, including the first meeting. Anyone missing more than three classes will be dropped from the course with a grade of E. One class meeting may be missed without penalty. NOTE: All absences are counted, including the first class meeting.

  1. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY:

This course adheres to the academic honesty policy stated in the current MSU Undergraduate Bulletin.

Negative flags are carefully reviewed to make a determination as to whether a student should be denied admission OR if a professional development plan will be designed for the student’s progress towards program completion. NEGATIVE FLAGS MAY BE GROUNDS FOR DENIAL OF ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION AND/OR STUDENT TEACHING.
