Course Syllabus for MA23101 Basic Mathematics 5 : M3

Course Description:

The subject requires skills in creativity, logic, and systematic and methodical thinking in the following topics:

Surface area and Volume.Finding the surface area and volume of various solids: e.g. prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres.Conversions and applications of volume.

Estimation.The estimation of measurements in various situations.

Linear graphs. Graphs representing linear representations between two quantities and graphs of linear equations in two variables.

Systems of Linear Equations.Solving systems of linear equations in two variables and its applications.

  • Similarity. The concept of similar triangles, it mathematical applications, and applications in daily situations.
Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will have demonstrated:

An acquired mathematical skills and processes about solving various problems in finding surface area and volume of solids.

An understanding about numerical concepts and applications of estimation.

A knowledge, understanding, and mathematical skills and application of linear graphs.

An application of knowledge about systems of linear equations.

An appropriate knowledge and application about similarity.

Learning Procedures:

  • Lectures. Theseareseenasaverytime-efficientwayforstudentstolearnpartofthelargematerialinvolvedinthecorpusofmathematics.
  • Exercisesessions.Theseareorganizedmostoftenintandemwithlectures.Theyoccurasgroupswithsupervision,orindividuallyashomeworkwithsubsequentsupervisionoftheresults.
  • Homework.Whiledemandingonthetimeofthe teacher,homeworkisclearlyoneofthemosteffectivewaysinwhichstudentscanbeencouragedtoexplorethelimitsoftheircapabilities.
  • Projects.Thesearedoneindividuallyorinsmallgroups,andtypicallyinvolveputtingtogethermaterialfromdifferentsub-fieldstosolvemorecomplicatedproblems.Smallgroupprojectscanhelptodeveloptheabilitytodoteamwork(identifiedasanimportanttransferableskill).Theprojectsmayinvolvesignificantcomputationalelements,asinthecaseofthecomputationalcompetencesreferredtoabove.
