A.Course Description and Objectives.

1.This is a familiarization course providing an overview of the transportation freight rates and cargo classification system. It willenable the student to identify and evaluate basic shipper issues and the relationship between the shipper, the modes of transportation, and the consumer. The course will provide a look at how the transportation modes link together and the global role of transportation.

2.The objectives of the course are to provide the opportunity for the students to:

a.Analyze various freight rates and classification systems. Topics include Transportation pricing, rates, and negotiations, transit privileges, documentation, demurrage and detention. Case analysis and field studies used to develop decision-making skills.

b. Develop an understanding of the carrier organizations, structure, financing, marketing, and public relationships.

c. Develop a basic understanding of the management of private carriers and transportation in the public sector, to include International transportation.

d.Develop a vocabulary of transportation terms.

B.Outline of Course Topics.

Topics include the role and importance of transportation and the economics of freight rates. Also included is explanation of various forms in common use in freight and cargo transportation, introduction to tariffs and their use, in domestic and international movements, including intermodal shipments.
