Course: US History 1 Teacher: MR. MCGOWAN

COURSE INTRODUCTION, REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION

United States History 1 is a required course for students at David Brearley High School. This is a FULL YEAR course and is worth 5 credits at David Brearley High School. It is part of the Social Studies Dept.

REQUIREMENTS

Students must meet the school requirements for attendance, midterm, final exam and project and must also successfully meet the daily assignments, projects, readings, homework, discussions, quizzes and tests.

EVALUATION and GRADING SYSTEM

The grading system used in this course is based on the following formula- tests / projects / papers (40%), quizzes (20%), classwork / preparedness / participation (15%), homework (15%), and notebook (10%). There will typically be two and four tests and one (but sometimes more) project per marking period. Quizzes will be frequent and will consist of the announced and unannounced type. They will typically be based on the previous few days homework and classwork. Homework will be posted on Mr. McGowan's website ( and are due on time. Late homework will not be accepted unless the student is absent the day it was due. Homework is therefore due, so long as the student was in class (or aware) of the assignment. Only under extenuating circumstances will a student be able to turn in late homework (with or without penalty depending on the circumstances and reason.)

NOTEBOOKS

Students are required to keep and maintain a notebook which will be periodically graded for organization and content. This must be kept in a three ring binder which must be brought to class each day. If you are absent and need to get the classnotes from a friend you must recopy them by hand. Photocopied substitutions will not count for a grade.

CLASSROOM RULES / EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to

  1. be on time and prepared for class(including notebook, textbook, pen, pencil and homework.)
  1. take out homework as soon as the bell rings. When I check homework I will check it only once. If it is not ready when I get to your desk it will not be accepted
  2. follow all school rules
  3. be in class for the entire period. Going to the bathroom and getting drinks are a normal part of day but should not disrupt the learning process. In general the rule is, "if you gotta go, you gotta go", but if a pattern of leaving the room develops the teacher may require the student to come after school to make up the learning time missed during the period.
  4. treat all others with RESPECT at all times

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

1)Remove all pocketbooks, purses, book bags or other similar items from your desk (and your back.) These items should be stored below the desk or left in your locker. Your desk is your work space and must be easily accessible.

2)Take out homework as soon as you get into class and have it ready to be checked. I will not you to "look" for your homework. You must know where it is (keep yourself organized!)

3)Sharpen all pencils / take out all needed materials BEFORE the class begins.

4)Begin work immediately on Do Now when you enter the room.

5)If you have a question raise your hand and wait to be called on before asking it.
