Dr. Carolyn Waters Broe, American conductor, composer and violist has been the featured soloist and conductor with orchestras in both California and Arizona. Carolyn Broe is the founding conductor of the Four Seasons Orchestra which is an all professional chamber orchestra located in Scottsdale, Arizona since 1992. This excellent ensemble performs Baroque, Contemporary and Classical music genres. The Four Seasons Orchestra was nominated in two Grammy categories in 2000 for “Best Small Ensemble” and “Best New Composition”. In 2009 Carolyn Broe conducted the Four Seasons Orchestra in the Haydn Festival in Vienna, Austria at the Vienna Konzerthaus and EsterhazyPalace.
She received her Bachelors of Music Performance from ChapmanUniversity, her Masters in Fine Arts in Music from California State University Long Beach; and her Doctorate in Music from ArizonaStateUniversity in Viola Solo Performance. She studied conducting with John Koshak, and attended master classes with Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and Herbert Bloomstedt. Broe studied viola with Jerry Epstein of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Louis Kievman of the NBC Symphony, European concert violist Adriana Chirlov, and Dr. William Magers of ArizonaStateUniversity.
Carolyn Broe wrote her 2001 Doctoral Dissertation on “The String Literature of Louise L. Kerr” at ASU. She is Kerr's first biographer and the first to publish an edition of Kerr's music with her "Five Character Pieces for Viola and Piano". Broe conducted the European premiere of Kerr's 1948 symphonic tone poem "Enchanted Mesa" in Vienna, Austria. Broe discovered the genre "Southwest Impressionism" that Kerr and other Arizona and New Mexico composers were using in the 1940's in step with the Southwest painters. She also nominated L.L. Kerr for the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame, who was inducted in 2004. Broe is writing "The Life and Music of Louise Lincoln Kerr" and working on the "Arizona Profiles" CD project with Four Seasons Orchestra for the 2012 Arizona Centennial.
Carolyn Broe holds several awards including: Woman of the Year from American Biographical in 1993; The Dream Catcher Award of 1995; Marquis’ Who’s Who of Women 2001; The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture “Artists’ Award” for 2005; and the Universal Who's Who of 2012. She has conducted numerous world premieres including the 9-11 works by Tucson composer Thomas Woodson. Carolyn Broe is currently teaching at ParadiseValleyCommunity College. She recently toured with the American Festival Orchestra and performed ten concerts in China.
