General Classroom Philosophy

School rules in the SMCHS student handbook will be followed. To further emphasize, I have one main classroom rule- RESPECT WILL BE SHOWN AT ALL TIMES (An atmosphere of mutual respect will be established and maintained).

If something is deemed disrespectful, a rule has been broken. This rule includes, but is not limited to the following:

-Be in class, in your seat and ready to learn when the bell rings.

-Stay in your seat unless, otherwise instructed, until the bell rings to be excused.

-Remain quiet during all school announcements and school masses, rallies etc. (at the appropriate times).

-Come to Class prepared (see required materials list above) ** this will directly affect your participation grade.

-Keep classroom neat and clean. (Students’ are responsible for their desk and surrounding area)

-Follow instructions

-Do your own work - Cheating or academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated (copying, plagiarism, etc.) and it will result in a ZERO and a referral or other disciplinary action.

Consequences for not following Classroom Rules

This class will be challenging in the respect that a lot of material will be covered in a short amount of time. When students do not follow the above rules they will hinder not only their opportunity to learn but also my opportunity to teach and the learning opportunities of the students around them. This will not be tolerated and the following are likely consequences**:

1 - Verbal warning

2 - Being moved (a temporary, long term or permanent seat assignment)

3 – Dean’s Detention (automatic for unauthorized use of I-pods, cell phones, calculator games, writing on desks, leaving trash, etc.)

4 - Call to parents or parent conference

5 - Referral to Dean with recommendation

**Note – Severe disruptions may warrant immediate referrals to the Dean/Principal or more severe action and I reserve the right to determine the appropriate consequence based on the type of violation and/or behavior of the individual. Students who show blatant disrespect or challenging behavior may be removed from the class for the remainder of the year. The final decision will be made by the Dean’s Office and Academic Office.

Positive Recognition

As you put forth your best efforts in this class you will be recognized or acknowledged for the good work you have done. The recognition may come in many forms (for example praise, positive notes or calls home, individual privileges, etc).

Class Guidelines and Makeup work policy:

Homework/Projects/Class work: Assigned work will be recorded on or after the date it is due. Late work will not be accepted except for excused absences. If a student is absent the day something is due or recorded, they will be expected to turn it in the day they return to class.

Tests/Quizzes: If you miss class a day before a test or quiz, you will still be expected to take the test at the scheduled time with the rest of the class, with few exceptions. If you miss the day of a test, assuming your absence is excused, you will be required to take the makeup test, within one week of the test date, in the Testing Lab (G220) offered on the first available Tuesday or Friday. Tuesday’s lab is from 2:35-3:30 p.m. and Friday’s is from 6:30-7:25 a.m. Students with excused absences of two or more days will be allowed as many days of the absence to make up the test. Missed quizzes will be made up at the teacher’s discretion (usually the day the student returns). Any test or quiz not made up within the allotted time will receive a score of a Zero.

All Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students will take a Common Assessment at the end of the 1st Quarter and the 3rd Quarter. The Common Assessments measure the level of understanding of a subset of the California State Standards and represent what is considered by the SMCHS Math Department to be the “non-negotiables” or the minimum of what the student must learn in order to be successful in subsequent math classes. We have set an 80% level of mastery as the benchmark expectation for our students on these exams. In the event that a student does not meet that benchmark, we will strongly encourage participation in our Mastery Achievement Program which provides the student an opportunity to improve his/her grade on the common assessment and ultimately achieve the 80% level of mastery. For more information regarding the Mastery Achievement Program see the Math Department Web Page at

*Any work, quiz, or test missed due to an UNEXCUSED absence/tardy will receive a ZERO.

Groupwork: Group work and projects are to be complete and are due on their due date without exception. If one member of a group is absent on a project’s due date it is their responsibility to email me their portion or physically turn it in on or before the due date. An Individual and a group grade will be given for group assignments.

If there are any questions regarding rules or policies, please contact me. I am looking forward to teaching you this year. As you come to class prepared and maintain a level of respect for myself and your classmates while giving your best effort, I know you will find this class rewarding and will do very well in it.

Class Agreement (Algebra 1, Algebra 2 or College Math)

I have read, understand and agree to all of the school and classroom rules set forth by Santa Margarita Catholic High School, and Mr. Hirschman as listed in the course syllabus and the separate document titled Classroom Policies. I also understand that consequences will result from any infraction of the rules outlined.
