CLINICAL SKILLS FOR THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT I
Catalog Description:
70A - Clinical Skills For The Medical Assistant I 3 units
Introduction to the clinical role of the Medical Assistant. Includes basic and advanced skills which are utilized when assisting the physician and performing direct patient care. Prerequisite: Health 51A (may be taken concurrently). 2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory.

Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course, the student should be able to:
1. describe the components of medical terms;
2. build medical terms using word parts;
3. define a medical term, by dividing it into its elements;
4. spell and pronounce medical terms;
5. apply medical terms and abbreviations appropriately;
6. identify word roots, suffixes, prefixes, anatomical, diagnostic, medical, surgical, and additional terms as they relate to each body system;
Expected Outcome for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. perform within scope of practice
2. apply local, state and federal health care legislation and regulation appropriate to the medical assisting practice setting
3. practice Standard Precautions
4. select appropriate barrier/personal protective equipment (PPE) for potentially infectious situations
5. perform hand washing
6. demonstrate proper use of the following equipment: eye wash, fire extinguishers and sharps containers
7. apply HIPAA rules in regard to privacy/release of information
8. obtain vital signs
9. perform patient screening using established protocols
10. assist physician with patient care
11. apply critical thinking skills in performing patient assessment and care
12. prepare a patient for procedures and/or treatments
13. report relevant information to others succinctly and accurately
14. document patient care
15. perform assessment and procedures on the eye
16. perform assessment and procedures on the ear
17. prepare items for autoclaving
18. perform sterilization procedures
19. assist with minor surgical procedures
20. perform quality control measures
21. perform CLIA waived urinalysis and urine pregnancy tests
22. screen test results
23. distinguish between normal and abnormal test results
24. develop and maintain a current list of community resources related to patients’ healthcare needs

Medical assisting is competency based; to receive credit for the class the student must complete the following skills competencies
1. Aseptic hand washing
2. Donning and removing non-sterile gloves
3. Disposal of biohazardous material
4. Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas
5. Prepare and assist with routine and specialty examinations: Patient positioning
6. Obtain and record a patient history
7. Prepare and assist with routine physical exam
8. Obtain and record a temperature using a disposable, electronic and tympanic thermometer
9. Obtain and record a radial and apical pulse
10. Obtain and record respirations
11. Use a pulse oximeter
12. Obtain and record a blood pressure
13. Obtain and record weight and height
14. Identify surgical instruments
15. Sanitize instruments
16. Wrap instruments for the autoclave
17. Sterilize instruments in the autoclave
18. Assist with minor surgery
19. Apply bandages
20. Remove sutures
