Lectures: / Tuesday and Thursday, 7:00 – 8:50 pm inBiology Building 121.
Tutorial: / The 1 hour Tutorial would be held during the second hour on Thursdays.
Office Hours: / Wednesday 2:00– 4:00pm in Lambton Tower 10-102.
You are welcome to try and see me at other times but it is good idea to first email to arrange a meeting.
MTLC
(ER 3125) / The Mathematics Teaching and Learning Centre(Erie Hall 3125) is available to all students in 62-194 for help. It is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 – 5:00 pm.
Course Text: / “Mathematical Applications For the Management, Life and Social Sciences, Second Custom Edition for 03-62-194”. This custom edition consists of selections from “Mathematical Applications For the Management, Life and Social Sciences", Eighth Edition, by Ronald J. Harshbarger and James J. Reynolds. The publisher is Nelson Education. Any past edition of the book is sufficient.
Course Notes: / Complete course noteswill be available on CLEW. Many students find these resources sufficient in order to obtain a good mark in the course.
Practice / A complete set of practice questions as well as past exams and tests will be available on CLEW.
Evaluation: / Test # 1Oct 515%
Test #2Oct 2620%
Test #3Nov 1615%

Overall Expectations / At the end of this course the successful student will be able to read a variety of simple business scenarios, choose and develop an appropriate mathematical model for the scenario, solve the mathematical model with the appropriate techniques, verify the solution, and writeout the solution using complete sentences and proper grammar.
Specific Expectations /
- Understand the mathematical models underlying business scenarios that require
- Investment mix.
- Break-even analysis.
- Profit / revenue maximization.
- Depreciation.
- Manufacturing (product) mix.
- Supply and demand analysis.
- Future Value and Present Value calculations.
- Investment comparison.
- Public opinion (marketing).
- Quality control.
- Market trend analysis.
- Solve the underlying mathematical models using techniques and concepts such as
- Solution of linear equations using matrix row reduction and matrix inverses.
- Solution of linear inequalities in two variables using graphs.
- Graphing lines, quadratic functions, and exponential functions.
- Solution of quadratic, exponential and logarithmic equations.
- Graphical solution of linear optimization programs.
- Counting using combinations and permutations.
- Calculation of probabilities.
- Use of the binomial distribution.
- Use of discrete and continuous probability distributions.
- Use of transition matrices.
- Use of the normal approximation to the binomial distributions.
- Use of spreadsheets to solve equations linear optimization problems; to calculate probabilities with the normal distribution, and for matrix calculations.
Software: / It is hoped that students will make use of spreadsheet software, such as Excel© when working with the suggested problems. Demonstrations will be given during tutorials.
Calculator: / The official calculator is the CASIO fx-300MS available at the bookstore for about $20.00. Similar calculators are acceptable.
Teaching Evaluation: / The Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) will be administeredduring class in the last two weeks of classes.
Academic Integrity: / The expectation is that students will demonstrate academic integrity in all aspects of the course. I do, however, encourage students to work together for test and exam preparation.
Email: / The best way to reach me is Email. I typically answer emails very soon. Please put “62-194” in the subject line.
Missed Tests and Exam / There is no need to provide notes / excuses for missed tests. The value of missed testswill be moved to the exam. For example, if you miss 2 tests, the final will be worth 80%.
If you miss the final exam for a documented, valid reason you will be given a chance to rewrite on Dec 18 or accept an aegrotat grade. In this case you must complete the “Faculty of Science Student Medical Certificate” available on the course CLEW site.
