CAD FOR ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN

Catalog Description:

68 - CAD for Architecture and Interior Design3 units

(May be repeated 3 times)

Introduction to computer-aided drafting. Topics include command basics including drawing entity creation and modification, industry layering standards, text and dimensioning systems appropriate to architecture, creating symbol libraries, external reference techniques, model and paper space commands, and plotting techniques. May not receive credit if Interior Design 68 has been completed. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio.

Expected Outcomes for Students:

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

  1. identify hardware uses and limitations appropriate to computer-aided drafting (CAD);
  2. open, retrieve, and save drawing files;
  3. draw lines and geometric shapes using various coordinate entry systems;
  4. control screen views of drawn entities;
  5. select and modify drawing entities;
  6. control lines, layers and colors using AIA (American Institute of Architects) standards;
  7. place text with appropriate fonts and sizes in drawings;
  8. dimension drawings using architectural standards;
  9. create and insert blocks and symbol libraries;
  10. insert external references into drawings;
  11. use model and paper space commands;
  12. plot hardcopies with appropriate scales.

Course Content (lecture):

  1. Hardware uses and limitations appropriate to computer-aided drafting
  2. CAD organization and system components
  3. Open, retrieve, and save drawing files

Course Content (studio):

  1. Apply hardware uses and limitations appropriate to computer-aided drafting
  2. Apply CAD organization and system components
  3. Apply commands in drawing
  4. Apply lines and geometric shapes by using various coordinate entry systems

  6. Apply text with appropriate fonts and sizes in drawings

Methods of Presentation:

  1. Lecture, whiteboard and computer demonstration
  2. Presentation of drawing samples

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:

  1. Typical Assignments
  2. Draw polygons and simply geometry shapes by using various coordinate systems, multiple layers and linetypes (AIA layering standard).
  3. Show the use of the modification commands such as Copy, Move, Offset, Mirror, Trim, Extend, Array, Scale, Rotate
  4. Create a simple floor plan by using hatches, texts and architectural dimensioning and leader lines
  5. Create a symbol library with Blocks and Wblocks
  6. Create a drawing using Paper and Model spaces entities with multiple Attributes
  7. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

  10. Final Examination
