Introduction:
Endodontics is that branch of dentistry concerned with the study of the form, function and health of, injuries to, and diseases of the dental pulp and periradicular region, their prevention and treatment. The aetiology and diagnosis of dental pain and diseases are integral parts of endodontic practice.
Aims:
This course aims to provide undergraduate dental students with basic knowledge in endodontics. It includes a series of lectures covering different aspects of endodontics as well as laboratory sessions where root canal treatment will be completed on a number of extracted teeth.
The overall goal of this course is to train students to be able to perform mechanical aspects of root canal treatment. More importantly, students should learn endodontic diagnosis & treatment planning.
Specific objectives: following successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the development & histology of the dental pulp.
- Classify pulp and periradicular pathoses and learn their diagnoses.
- Select a treatment plan for each diagnosis.
- Describe the importance of radiographs in endodontic diagnosis & treatment.
- Define a basic set of endodontic instruments.
- Describe the most common root and pulp anatomy for each tooth.
- Make access into the pulp chamber.
- Determine canal lengths.
- Clean and shape the root canal system.
- Correctly use intracanal irrigants and medicaments.
- Perform lateral condensation with gutta percha.
- Understand the criteria used to evaluate access, working length, canal preparation and obturation.
Students’ evaluation:
Intrasemester evaluation: 40%. This includes theoretical exam, quizzes and continuous assessment.
Final Examination: 60%. This includes theoretical and practical examinations.
