Course Objectives and Rules

Geometry

Mrs. McConaghy

Objectives:

  • Describe physical reality using the language of geometry
  • Develop logical thinking skills
  • Develop problem solving skills by making and supporting conjectures

Books and Materials:

Geometry: Concepts and Skills (McDougal Littell) is the required book. In addition, you must have a binder and looseleaf paper or a notebook for notes and homework assignments. Bring your own book, binder, calculator and a pencil to class every day.

Homework:

As in any mathematics class, practice and reinforcement of topics introduced in class is essential. For this reason, homework problems will be assigned daily and will be discussed. Homework provides daily feedback on the material we are learning and how well you understand it. Please use homework with this purpose in mind. Assignments are accepted one day late for half credit. Those students who are not prepared to work diligently and daily cannot expect to succeed in this class.

Grading Scale:

A+100 – 99C+79 – 77

A 98 – 93C76 – 73

A-92 – 90C-72 – 70

B+89 – 87D+69 – 67

B 86 – 83D66 – 63

B-82 – 80D-62 – 60

E 59 – 0

Grades:

  • Homework will be checked every day for completion and is worth 4 points each day. Late homework will be accepted only 1 day late, for half credit. Homework will be counted as 10% of the quarter grade.
  • Notes will be checked every day for completion and are worth 4 points each day. Notes will be counted as 10% of the quarter grade.
  • Warm-up problems will be given each day as we start class. They may or may not be collected on any given day. Warm-ups will be counted as 5% of the quarter grade.
  • Quizzes are usually given approximately halfway through a chapter. Each of these quizzes will be counted as two weights. Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. Each test will count as three weights. Altogether, quizzes and tests will be counted as 75% of the quarter grade.

Tests and Quizzes:

  • Dates for tests and quizzes will be posted on the bulletin board.
  • Quizzes and tests will be returned in class so that we may go over them and learn from any mistakes, but must stay in the classroom.

Absences:

  • If you miss notes or homework, check the bins for any handouts. You will have as many days as you missed to make up these assignments. You may show them to me for full credit (for excused absences only, of course) when I am checking homework for the day.
  • If you miss a quiz or test, it needs to be made up within one week of your return. If it is not made up in that time period, it will be counted as an E.
  • Any quiz or test that is missed due to an unexcused absence will be counted as an E.

Rules:

  • Be prompt. Be polite. Be prepared. Be productive.
  • No food is allowed in the classroom.
  • No cell phones. Ipods may be allowed on rare occasions.
