25. Please provide any other input, comments or suggestions you may have about classroom configurations.

Text Response
Will there be white boards or other opportunities to include information not on powerpoint slides?
We might also want to consider summer teaching. However, I'm assuming we'll have more classroom options in the summer since not as many classes are held.
The flexible node chair seating provides the most flexibilty for a diverse teaching set of options. They can be placed in a traditional seating arrangement as we now have in most of the rooms, or they can be moved to form groups in a spontaneous approach. Very often faculty will lecture for part of a period, then form groups for the remainder of the period. A two person table is more difficult to move than an mode chair for a 10 minute exercise.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide this information.
Strong preference to be able to rearrange into groups of varying sizes for discussion, experiential learning, etc. When I run a simulation I need to have access to a computer classroom for at least part of the time.
Overall, I prefer more flexibility including both tables and chairs in the 48-seat classroom.
Obviously, flexibility is ideal. I like the idea of being able to easily reconfigure classrooms for different purposes.
Not relevant to configurations, but I would LOVE to have old-fashioned chalkboards! White boards are fine, but do the markers work? I still can't tell without trying them.
Need to make sure that the instructor is not boxed in behind the podium. This is my big beef in Calvin classrooms. The location and orientation of the computer equipped podium should be thought out very carefully.
My classes are mostly lecture based. I tend to have the students work together outside of class. During class times, I provide the guidance and expect the student to be focused on what I'm talking about during class.
I would prefer the fixed seating classes.
I would be nice to have a flat panel on the back wall so that the instructors can see what is on the front screen and keep facing forward without having to look over on their shoulder to catch up.
I would add computer applications to my Acctg 432 class if there were more lab space available. The questions in the survey do not have an option for my actual opinions. I commonly switch from traditional lecture to group work in a class session (about 50/50) so I would have preferred listing more than two seating preferences in most cases rather than rank them 1-3.
It would be much better to have higher seats in the back and lower seats in front (gradually lowering seats). Tables can have power outlets and internet connections.
I prefer flexible seating that can be moved and arranged into groups.
I DO NOT WANT ANY FIXED SEATING. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DO OFF-THE-CUFF IN CLASS ACTIVITIES WHEN THE TABLES ARE BOLTED DOWN. I NEED TO MOVE PEOPLE AROUND, GROUP, UNGROUP, AND REGROUP DIFFERENTLY FOR THE THINGS THAT WE DO. 80+ PERCENT OF THE TIME, I NEED FLEXIBILITY IN SEATING.
I don't mind moving seating around. Students do so fairly willingly and quickly once they know how the class should be configured. That said, I'd be interested in whether it would be loud for other classrooms (e.g., beside and below). Last semester there was a class above mine that must have reconfigured seating during class every day, and it was definitely a distraction with how loud it was to do so.
I certainly prefer movable seating in the 48-student classrooms. I believe this will allow the most flexibility for all instructors to customize the room to meet their needs. In my courses, I lecture some days and have group work on other days. Movable seating would allow my class to change the room set-up based on the activity planned on that day. This format would also be preferred for exam days, as students sharing tables/desks presents an opportunity for cheating.
I am not the best person at building design and was not completely sure about what classroom arrangement I would use for my classes. I really appreciate the hard work of everyone on this very important committee.
Flexibility is critical to successful implementation of a "Flipped Classroom" approach, which is what I do now with ACCTG 810 and ACCTG 860. It is also critical for teaching my "Case Base" courses, which is what I do for ACCTG 835 and ACCTG 642. The current "fixed tables" in Calvin Hall make it very difficult to use these approaches to teaching, which involve a lot of hands on group activity during the scheduled class session.
Are there tables and chairs for the instructors in each class-room?
