Course Name: Math 6 (Course 2)Room: 316

Teacher: Mrs. Janet Genordemail:

Phone: 651-439-5581 ext. 245

Course Contents/Objectives: This course will continue and expand upon topics that Course 1 left off with. We will work both with and without calculators to help strengthen base math skills. We will work with operations of decimal numbers, whole numbers, integers, fractions and rational numbers. We will solve equations and inequalities. Other topics covered (but not limited to) will include number patterns, ratio, proportion, percent, probability, geometric figures, surface area and volume.

Materials Needed:

  • A section of a 3-ring binder with loose leaf notebook paper (or spiral notebook) and graph paper
  • Pencil and Eraser –tests and quizzes must be in pencil (NO PENS)
  • ScientificCalculator
  • Color pencils are recommended
  • School Issued Text book (Text book replacement cost approximately $90.00)

Classroom Expectations:

Behavior:Students are expected to be on time, in their seat, with their text book, calculator and other supplies when class begins. Students are expected to quietly read the board when they enter the room and be respectful and courtesy of others in the class. If student behavior prevents the day’s lesson from being taught, the student will be asked to “make a choice” in accordance with the classroom “Behavior Plan” posted in the room. Any student(s) caught cheating will receive a score of zero and both a parent and administrator will be notified, this includes copying another students homework assignment.

Assignments: Assignments (both in-class and homework) are due upon request (usually at the beginning of class). All work must be shown with each problem to receive full credit. A homework assignment may take multiple nights to complete. In those cases, students will be expectedto complete a certain portion of the assignment each night before the final assignment grade is recorded. Students who do not complete the required problems (or assignment)will initial a tracking sheet and parents will be notified if student’s lack of homework occurs frequently.

Absences/Make-up: Make-up work is the student’s responsibility.Lesson notes and assignments should be available for students to copy (and/or see on line). Students may check the posted assignment logs to see what assignment(s) they missed. If a student misses the test day, they will be expected to take the test the first white period after they return. If a student only missed the test review day, they are still expected to take the test on the schedule test day. For test security reasons, tests will not be allowed out of the classroom. For most tests a comprehensive review sheet will be given as a study guide. Students may compare their review and test to see what concepts they did not do well on.

Grading: Middle school is a transition period to high school. For this reason the “Tests/Quizzes/ Projects” category is graded more heavily as course levels advance. For Course 2 (Math 6th Grade), categories are weighted as follows:

50% - Tests/Quizzes/Projects(accuracy grade)

50% - Homework Assignments/In-class Assignments/Participation (part effort-part accuracy grade)

Grades will be available on line and updated as items are graded. Letter Grades for the Middle School are determined by the scalefound in the St. Croix Catholic School,Parent-Student Handbook, on page 17.

Extra Help: Upon request, I will be available for extra helpbefore school(except on Wednesday). Please email meat least one school day in advance. I will reply (via email) to confirm whether if I am available or not that day.

Study Suggestions:

1. Take notes and attempt all class examples. (If possible use color pencils to help follow notes)

2. For in-class notes and assignments, be sure to copy the problem, show all the steps for solving, and circle your final answer.

3. When checking homework answers, (if you get a wrong answer) make sure you understand what you did wrong. Ask questions during class or come in for extra help during white periods.

4. Keep up with assignments. When absent, get missing assignments and complete as soon as possible. Then check your answers to make sure you did the problems correctly.

5. Keep an organized binder by putting your name and date on everything. Also keep notes and homework in chronological order. Make sure you are numbering your assignments and keeping the assignment log up to date.

6. Come in for extra help as soon as you realize you are in trouble with the material. (If possible, schedule to come in before school)

7. Go back and look at problems from previous sections several days before a test or quiz (if possible do this daily).
