Spring 2017 – Math 1204 Official Syllabus

Course Name: College Algebra with Review (MATH 1204)

Required Materials:

  • ALEKS 18-week subscription. This can be bought at any of the local bookstores or at Aleks.com
  • TI-84 or below (or similar calculator). The TI-84 is highly recommended.

ALEKS Info:

ALEKS stands for Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces. ALEKS uses advanced algorithms and assessments (referred to as Knowledge Checks) to determine what you know. ALEKS offers 24/7 support at support.aleks.com

ALEKS Guarantee:

ALEKS has a guarantee for students taking courses using their software. If you fail an ALEKS course and have spent more than 25 hours in the software, you need to immediately email your instructor. ALEKS will provide a one-time retake of the course. (They will only pay for the software, you are responsible for paying other fees and tuition).

Calculators:

Each student will need a calculator for in-class work. You can borrow one from a friend if you would like, but you will need to bring it to class everyday. There are calculators provided in the testing center for assessments and exams but note that proctors are not allowed to help you with your calculator during test. TI-85 or higher calculators, laptops, cell phones, and other mobile devices are NOT acceptable calculators.TI-Nspires that are non-CAS are also allowed in this course, but your instructor may not be able to instruct you on how to use them.

The final grade will be the weighted average of the above categories. Letter grades will follow a 90-80-70-60 scale. There is no bonus, no rounding, and no curve in this course.

Pie Mastery:

Throughout the semester, you will be completing different parts of the Course Pie, which is on the main page of your ALEKS account. By 11:59 PM on May 4, 2017, you will need to have the pie complete to receive full credit. Partial credit will be award.

Time:

Each week, you will need to spend a minimum of 3 hours working in ALEKS. You can work on homework, assessments, or read an explanation. Those will all count towards your time on ALEKS. At least one weekly time goal will be dropped.

Objectives:

You will have objectives due periodically on ALEKS. These objectives consist of topics that we will be discussing in class. Some objectives will take time. It is strongly suggested that you do not procrastinate because you may get stuck on topics and you will not be able to move on. You can find help for these objectives by going to the MRTC, Class+ or contacting your instructor. At least one objective will be dropped.

Assessments:

There are two different types of assessment on ALEKS.

  • Initial Knowledge Check: The Initial Knowledge Check is what you are required to take first in ALEKS. You must complete this before you can start your homework. This is a knowledge check that covers the whole semester and will test to see what you know starting off.
  • Progress Knowledge Checks: Progress Knowledge Checks are short quizzes that are given after a certain number of topics are completed. These quiz over recently learned topics and topics that you might be able to master now that you have a better understanding of certain topics. There may be anywhere between 5-30 questions. You may put these knowledge checks off for up to 24 hours, but after that, you will have to complete them.

Tests:

You will have three tests that will be taken throughout the semester. The dates for these tests are on the course calendar and are mandatory. Please refer to the Testing Center Guidelines located at . Each exam is worth 10% of your grade.

Final Exam:

For the final exam, you will have a test in ALEKS that you will need to complete. This will not be an adaptive assessment. You will need to take your final on the May 7th, 8th, or 9th in the Champions Hall Testing Center. Times for Finals MRTC Testing Center hours will be emailed out later in the semester.

Wiki Group Projects:

Wikis are group projects that will be given out most weeks on Blackboard. You and your group members will work on coming up with solutions to conceptual activities that will be graded by your teacher and able to be viewed by other classmates. You must write in the actual wiki to receive credit for these assignments. Failure to do so mean you will receive an automatic zero. These are to be completed in groups and will serve as a review for the Written Exam.At least 1 Wiki will be dropped.

Written Exam:

The Written Exam is an in-class 50 minutes exam. This exam will test your knowledge of concepts in this course as well as how you can write about math. This exam will take place on Monday, April 24th during your class time and in your class room.

Participation:

Attendance and participation is mandatory for this course. Being on your cell phone or laptop during class is not participating. If you need to miss a day of class, please email your instructor before class if possible.

Course Entry Quiz:

This is a syllabus quiz. You must make a 100% on this quiz to get ANY credit for this portion of your grade. You have unlimited attempts to take this quiz.

Inclement Weather Policy:

Instructors make every effort to hold class. If you feel that travel is too hazardous due to weather conditions, inform your instructor by email.
