Course Guide Book

Year 12 ENGLISH (US)- 2011
Course Information
This course uses the National Curriculum Framework guide. The 2010 Ministry document ‘English in the New Zealand Curriculum’ underpins the three strands explored.
This course is internally assessed. It aims to develop your English skills with vocational training and the workplace as the main foci. You will:
¨  Develop reading, writing and communication skills to assist in work and further education.
¨  Be able to achieve NCEA Level 2 Literacy as a base qualification for the above.
“English is a key ingredient in western culture, communication and learning . . . Through reading and analysing a wide range of texts, students can deepen their understanding of human nature and behaviour. They develop intellectual rigour and, when writing about texts, they learn to structure their thoughts to present clear, evidence-based arguments. Then there’s the sheer pleasure of enjoying a good read.” (Career View, Victoria University 2009)

Assessment Procedures
·  All work for internal assessments MUST be your own.
·  Internal assessments must be completed in class. Drafts will be stored by your English teacher
·  Deadlines for internal tasks are outlined in the Assessment Plan
·  You are permitted ONE further assessment opportunity for selected assessments.
·  When a student is very close to achieving a grade, they may be able to ‘conference’ with their teacher for guidance on how to reach that standard.
·  At the end of the year you will be asked to sign off your credits in each subject.
Authenticity
·  All supporting evidence used in internal assessments must acknowledge sources through appropriate referencing.
·  Anyone caught plagiarising any part of an internal assessment will lose the credits available for that assessment. You will be expected to sign authenticity declarations and, where appropriate, submit working drafts.
Appeals
If you feel you have been inaccurately or unfairly assessed, you may lodge an appeal within two weeks of receiving your final grade. The correct procedure for appeals is:
·  Discuss the grade with your teacher and find out that reasons for it.
·  If that does not satisfy you, get an ‘Appeals Form’ from the Head of English. Lodge your appeal with them.
·  If that outcome is not satisfactory, you are entitled to appeal to the Principal’s Nominee (Mrs. Ponen). She will make a final decision within seven days.
Lateness and Missed Assessments
If you cannot meet the due date for an assessment, you must apply to the Head of English for an extension. If you do not meet the due date or the extended due date, you will not receive the credits available for that assessment. Valid reasons for requesting an extension include:
·  Illness – you must provide a note form your parents or a medical certificate.
·  Personal or family trauma – you must provide a note from your parents, Dean or the guidance counsellor.
·  School-based activities – please approach you teacher and the Head of English before undertaking a school trip or activity
