Introduction to

Coppicing Week

17th-21st September 2007

Newby Bridge, Cumbria

Cost £90 - £180

5 days of inspiring traditional woodland craft training taught by experienced professional craft tutors held in a beautiful Cumbrian woodland

Sponsored by: DEFRA VTS, The Headley Trust, Leader + and Friends of the Lake District with support from Cumbria Woodlands.

Woodland Pioneers

Bill Hogarth was a coppice merchant, working the woods in South Cumbria for the majority of his life. The aims of BHMAT are to promote coppicing through the setting up of an apprenticeship scheme. We now have 8 apprentices and are looking for two more for 2008.

We run an industry-led, broad based apprenticeship training that is recognised as the first of its kind in the UK. The training is for 3 years and is validated by the Open College North West.

For those new to Woodland Pioneers, Monday to Thursday will be made up of four one-day introductory woodcraft workshops. These will be:

Charcoal Making - Rebecca Oaks

Lead by local coppice worker Rebecca Oaks, this day will initiate you into the mysteries of charcoal burning, using ring kilns and an oil drum which is a great way to start making your own barbeque charcoal at home. She will also find time to look at good coppice practice.

Spoon Carving – James Mitchell

Learn the basic techniques for creating beautiful and functional spoons with James, BHMAT’s first apprentice and graduate to be awarded the full Bill Hogarth Coppice Diploma.

Rustic Oak Stools – Twiggy

By September 2007 Twiggy will have gained the Bill Hogarth Coppice Diploma. She will expertly guide you through the process of making a rustic oak stool to take home.

Gate Hurdles - Owen Jones

Owen Jones is best known as the country’s only full time oak swill basket maker. In this workshop Owen offers you the chance to have a go at cleaving and shaping wood to make a small gate hurdle.

Maurice Pyle – Pole Lathe

Maurice (Woodsmith and BHMAT Trustee) will teach you the correct use of tools such as the skew chisel, ferret, sizing gauge and ring tool so that you can undertake to produce small but challenging projects such as tool handles, baby’s rattles and chair legs. Some pole lathe experience would be helpful but is not essential.

Musical Instruments - Edward Acland

Lead by Edward Acland (BHMAT Trustee), this course will enable you to experiment with creating a wooden musical instrument.

Friday Workshops

Friday will be an open day with numerous woodcraft workshops including: willow work, clothes pegs, hurdles, besom brooms etc., plus a chance to hear more about the apprenticeship and to register your interest in it.

A certificate of attainment will be available to those who want it (£15).

Please note that you need a certificate if you wish to apply for the apprenticeship.
