By September 30, 2013, Imperial County will convene a minimum of five partners to collaborate on common goals and share resources and best practices that support active living and healthy eating environments. / A /
  1. Develop information sharing mechanisms throughthe expansion and/or development of best communication practices that formalize levels of workgroups and meeting frameworks and to facilitate communication across agencies and among the community.Communication mechanisms may include, but in not limited to the COPA website, agencies’ community calendars (e.g., chambers of commerce, local public & private agencies),and other communication venues.
  2. Set meeting dates and timesthat areconvenient for all CNAP workgroup members to maximize attendance.
  3. Continue to promote CNAP and invite traditional and non-traditional partners to join which may include: Imperial Valley Vegetable Growers Association; Imperial Valley Farm Bureau; Imperial County Office of Education - Wellness Prevention Programs; In-House Day Care, Family-Based Child Care; environmental agencies - U.S. Land Bureau; IVROP Specific Projects (Project Padres); IVC Student Body.
  4. Develop or adapt an existing tool to assess and inventory local programs and projects. The tool may include information on nutrition and physical activity-related projects and resources, restrictions, points of services, approved messages and means of communication, and other information.
  1. Identify consistent nutrition/physical activity messages for cross-agency use including USDA MyPlate and Dietary Guidelines, Container Gardening, etc.
  1. Develop short-term and long-term sustainability plan components that will support active living and healthy eating environments in Imperial County.

2. Nutrition Education.
By September 30, 2013, Imperial County will disseminate health eating and active living messages through nutrition, physical activity and Calfresh programs. / A / GENERAL EDUCATION AND AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
  1. Identify at least three public outreach events to promote healthy eating and active living messages (e.g., Children’s Fair, IV Wellness Expo, Mid-Winter Fair, etc.)
  2. Identify allowable county-wide potential areas of services. Map agency-specific points of service and ensure that all areas are covered and provided with nutrition/physical activity outreach/education.
  3. Establish list of existing and potential partners. Continue to invite traditional and non-traditional community agencies or private resources that may include: schools, food service directors, vendors, agencies, and/or the general community.
  4. Develop standards of communication with partners and community agencies to coordinate interventions, activities and efforts, market and advertise activities and share successes.
  5. Inventory resources available and develop a dissemination plan that will take into consideration diverse population needs, agencies’ resources and communication means.
  6. Prioritize healthy eating and active living messages according taking into considerationthe needs of the community, including culture and language.
  7. Ensure CNAP direction is in line with participating agencies’ efforts to optimize local collaboration and support.
SYSTEM & ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
  1. Develop or adapt atool to assess existing wellness policies and current needs for education and support in the areas of nutrition and physical activity. Areas of intervention may include but is not limited to: safety and options of physical activity, restaurant menus.
  1. Provide support and education to agencies, businesses, and the community in changing policies and ensuring alignment with established priorities.
GENERAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS & RESOURCES
  1. Recruit and/or work with eligible school breakfast and lunch programs, food service directors, vendors, agencies, and the community at large to promote healthy eating messages that are consistent with CNAP identified focuses.
  1. Look into activities related to: wellness policies, physical activity related to safety, sugary beverages and present to CNAP group for discussion
  1. Promote and encourage participation inexisting programs and resources (e.g. Women Infants and Children Program, School breakfast and lunch Programs, CalFresh)
  1. Coordinate and standardize constant messaging for media/outreach campaignsusing various outlets, including local media (radio, press); websites; billboards, etc.
  1. Make resources on nutritiion and physical activity available to agencies using various distribution mechanisms such as training, technical assistance, etc.
  1. Coordinate beverage promotion/ enhance activities for the Rethink Your Drink campaign at outlets such as health fairs, community based events, agency-focused events.

  1. Community Environments.

By September 30, 2013, Imperial County will work with at least one agency to improve healthy eating and active living environments. / A /
  1. Assess and survey local agencies’ interest, needs and current policies in the areas of nutrition and physical activity.
  1. Summarize findings and establish priorities of actions based on level of interest and findings.
  1. Determine criteria to select at least one agency to assist in improving healthy eating and physical activity living environments.
  1. Convey meetings with designated individuals to plan promotion activities and assist in implementing policies.
  1. Implement activity and provide assistance that may include: support in changing policies, promotion of health message and assistance in revising or implementing policies.
  1. Develop or adapt an existing tool to assess impact of local Food Deserts. Based on findings, increase access to fruits and vegetables and healthier choices that are affordable.
  1. Enhance existing community/farmer’s markets capability for the availability of locally grown produce; also increase the participation of local growers/farmers in order to increase availability of items at any given event.
  1. Decrease access to sugary beverages at an organizational level. Advocate for environmental and policy change and/or revise/adopt appropriate policies. Advocacy (environmental & policy changes)
