Narrative

On Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016, neighborhoods throughout Walworth County are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 33rd Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by law enforcement officers of Walworth County and the Walworth County Crime Stoppers, will involve over 16,728 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 38.3 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime”. NNO 2016 corporate sponsors are ADT, Nextdoor.com and Associa. Local sponsors are Aurora Medical Center, Peoples Bank, and Kunes Country Auto Group.

National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

From 5PM to 8:30PM on August 2nd, residents in neighborhoods throughout Walworth County and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. This event will be taking place at the Walworth County Fairgrounds with busing available from communities throughout Walworth County to and from this event.

National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin said, “This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation. On National Night Out, we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us in “Giving Crime and Drugs a Going Away Party.”

Walworth County’s National Night Out will be unique from other events as this is a combined effort with all seventeen law enforcement agencies in Walworth County, including the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Each department has an officer assigned to serve on the planning committee which has been meeting monthly since last November.

Some of the planned events are a mock crash, K9 demonstration, distracted driving simulator and much more along with exhibits from businesses and local organizations. This is a free event for the entire community. Local supporters of this event are People’s Bank, Lakeland Medical Center, Kwik Trip, Kunes County Auto Group, and Kikkoman Foods.
