MASTER’SCOMPREHENSIVEEXAMINATION REGISTRATION

The Master’s Comprehensive Exam (MCE) may be taken as early as the semester before the first field internship, but not sooner.

Only Master of Science (M.S.)degree candidates are required to take and pass the exam to graduate. But any student in the UNT Counseling Program may take the exam.

Candidates wishing to take the examination must pick up a registration/information handout (that is this handout currently in your hands) from the office staff of the Counseling Program. The Counseling Program office is located in Room 155 of Stovall Hall.Candidates must complete the registration form (the next page of this handout) and return it with payment to the designated address before the posted registration deadline (see below for registration deadlines and exam dates). See next page (last paragraph) for payment information.

The MCE examinationis the national Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) and covers the following 8 areas:1) Human Growth and Development; 2) Social and Cultural Foundations; 3) Helping Relationships; 4) Group Work; 5) Career and Lifestyle Development; 6) Appraisal; 7) Research and Program Evaluation; and 8) Professional Orientation and Ethics. To prepare for the CPCE exam you can study the same materials you would study for the National Counselor Exam (NCE) sponsored by the National Board for Certified Counselors(see their website for a list of study guides for examinations).Note the MCE (CPCE) exam required for graduation is not the same as the NCC exam required for licensure.

All exams will be in location listed below, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., unless notified otherwise.Do not register more than 75 days before the time of the examination.
