Cotton Harvesters : Chassis, Engine & Transmissions

/
Chassis
A rugged 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6-in). tubular steel mainframe on the 9970 provides superior strength and rigidity. The frame design provides proven reliability and cost-effectiveness.
The 9996 features a 18 x 18 cm (7 x 7 in.) chassis frame which is built to handle the six row units, basket loads, rough harvest conditions and the transverse-mounted engine.
Transmissions
Three-speed transmission provides a powerful, simple drive train. Infinitely variable hydrostatic drive and 3-speed transmission allows changing ground speed to match field conditions without shifting.
The 9996 features dual hydrostatic drives
The inner hydrostatic pump drives the transmission and the outer hydrostatic pump drives the row units
The larger dual hydrostatic drives allow more power to be transmitted to drive the units and the transmission, thus increasing the efficiency of the machine
Engines
9996 Cotton Pickers
An 8.1 litre PowerTech™ engine delivers 261 kW (350 hp) that boots harvesting performance in high-yielding cotton and difficult field conditions. Plus, a 9.5% Power Boost (up to 286 kW) provides extra power when compacting cotton.
9970 Cotton Pickers
The 8.1 litre PowerTech™ 186 kW (250 hp) engine delivers constant power and excellent low speed torque. The engine's excellent fuel economy, combined with the large 450 litre fuel tank, assures that more time is spent picking and less time is spent refuelling.

Height Sensing

Automatic height sensing valves, on the 9970 Cotton Pickers, direct hydraulic oil to unit lift cylinders to help maintain constant picking at a pre-determined height. The sensing shoes can be easily adjusted to the desired picking height enabling operators to pick those low-hanging bolls.

Electronic row-unit height control, available with 9996 Cotton Pickers, allows operators to adjust both the height and sensitivity ‘on-the-go’ from the comfort of the cab. Each row unit has a hydraulic valve operated by a solenoid that is tied into the height sensing shoe.

Optional Row-Trak™ Guidance Systems

Available on 9996 Cotton Pickers

To maximise picking efficiency and reduce operator fatigue, the Row-Trak™ row guidance system is available. It is designed to keep the picker aligned on the row for 'hands-off' operation.

The Row-Trak™ guidance system utilises a probe assembly that mounts to the row unit. The probe assembly runs on both sides of the row. A centre pivot allows side-to-side movement of the probe as it follows the row, activating an electronic sensor that sends a signal to the controller.

The feedback sensor mounts to the steering arm on the guide axle and sends a signal to the system controller so it is aware of how far the guide wheels are turned and in what direction.

The system controller monitors the inputs from the probe and feedback sensor and sends a signal to the hydraulic manifold. The main function of the controller is to monitor the input signal from the probe sensor and the feedback sensor and send output signals to the hydraulic manifold to adjust the steering system.

The hydraulic manifold assembly receives signals from the systems controller, locks out the steering wheel, and locks in the proportional directional control valve when the system is activated. It also signals the controller immediately when the operator turns the steering wheel to regain manual control. The manifold assembly mounts under the cab.

Introducing the PRO-12 VRS (Vari-Row System) Picking Units
Customers will recognise the feed path on the left-hand side as it resembles the field proven JohnDeere PRO-12 design.
JohnDeere achieved Ultra Narrow Row Cotton picking capabilities by adding a feeding and cutting mechanism on the right hand side. As the second row feeds into the picking unit, the rotary knives cut the stems of the plant.
The feeder then holds the cut row against the standing row as it enters the front drum picking zone. The speed of the feeding and cutting mechanism is synchronised with the speed of the head.
As the crop passes from the front drum to the rear drum picking zone a kicker assists the feeding of the cut-row. The spindles on the rear drum then pick any remaining unpicked open bolls.
PRO-SERIES Picking Units
Go with a "PRO" for the ultimate in picking speed and efficiency. Both the PRO-16 and PRO-12 inline row units offer outstanding features that boost productivity, improve service convenience, and enhance reliability.
PRO-SERIES units feature two drums positioned 'in-line' on the crop row for a narrow row-unit profile.
  • Units utilise only right-hand parts
  • Bars are made of high-strength aluminium and have a five-bearing design for maximum durability and reliability
  • Bar journal design provides improved life and easier serviceability
  • Cam track has a low load design for smoother operation and longer life.
  • Cam track design allows easy access to cam rollers.
  • Units feature speed sensors with monitors to alert the operator of possible problems
  • Doffer zone monitors alert operator of duct-plugging problems
  • Stalklifters have a fade-resistant colouring
  • Swing-out moistener columns provide easy access for service
PRO-16 Picking Units
  • Consists of a 20-spindle high, 16-bar front, and 12-bar rear drum design
PRO-12 Picking Units
  • Consists of an 18-spindle high, 12-bar front and rear drum design.
