The exhibition “50 Designers – 50 Costumes” illuminates the costume designer's process. The exhibit features 50 original costumes and costume sketches selected by the exhibiting designers from their recent work. Some of the highlights include Milena Canonero's 1780 aristocratic court dress from "The Affair of the Necklace" and Anthony Powell's red dragon gown for Cruella DeVil from "102 Dalmatians" and the wedding dress for "Frida" designed by Julie Weiss.
For more information on the exhibit, go to click on "events" and then "50 Designers/50 Costumes ". There is a 125-Page catalogue available for purchase.
The CSA panel discussion "Making History – Creating Character -The Art of the Film Costume Designer" includes a unique group of designers and archivists coming together for this special event.
“The art of the costume designer is in creating as many characters as a film calls for allowing for history, budget, the desires and fantasies of the director-producers -actor-studio as well as the color palette set by the director/art department /location. All of these elements must be taken into consideration for that dress that may be on screen a total of six seconds.” The archivists will discuss the challenge of collecting film history and who decides what will be history.
