WORK EXPERIENCE

Assistant Professor, Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Aug 2014 – present

West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV

  • Research highly efficient combustion systems for power generation and propulsion using natural gas, dual fuels, and various blends of natural gas with biomass, coal derivatives and other alternative fuels, including accurate “well-to-wheel” analysis of the shale-gas-derived fuels in terms of efficiency and emissions.
  • Provide a fundamental understanding of the composition and property effects of natural gas and other shale-gas-derived fuels, and their blends with other renewable and/or unconventional fuels on conventional and advanced combustion strategies by formulating and studying well-characterized fuels made from shale-gas stocks, commercial blending stocks, and pure compounds, using conventional combustion emissions and efficiency measurements, high-speed imaging of combustion processes, and laser diagnostics.
  • Advanced fuels and combustion strategies for modern gasoline and diesel IC engines
  • In-cylinder visualization of combustion phenomena
  • On-board natural-gas-to-liquid-fuel reforming.
  • Laser-based technologies for the detection of surface and sub-surface water and soil contamination
  • Health and environmental effects from the combustion of shale-gas-derived fuels and their blends with other renewable and/or unconventional fuels.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Sandia National Laboratories - Mar 2012 – July 2014Combustion Research Facility, Engine Combustion Department, Livermore, CA

  • Investigate the effects of fuel chemical and physical properties on various advanced combustion strategies for enabling high-efficiency, clean internal combustion (IC) engines
  • Quantify the impacts of emerging bio-derived and renewable fuel blends on processes occurring within IC engine combustion chamber
  • Apply a large variety of laser-based and advanced imaging diagnostics (e.g., Mie scattering of laser light, high-speed soot natural luminosity, combustion chemiluminescence, and laser-induced incandescence) to gain a fundamental understanding of fuel effects on the detailed in-cylinder mixing and combustion processes that govern engine efficiency and emissions
  • Complete analysis of the combustion process (performance, efficiency, and emissions) using different engine models and computer platforms
  • Develop new theoretical and practical approaches for fuel-effects characterization; research and propose new fuels components and combustion strategies to further increase engine efficiency and reduce emissions
  • Investigate fuel sprays for various combustion strategies
  • Supply critical experimental data to engine manufacturers and fuel suppliers to achieve legislated targets in the most cost-effective manner possible
  • Interact with the combustion community to increase Sandia contribution and visibility

______

Research Associate, National Research Council Canada, Jan 2009 – Mar 2012

Ottawa, ON, Canada

  • Design, develop and conduct IC engine advanced combustion studies
  • Investigate fuel property effects on advanced combustion through a complete analysis of the combustion process (performance, efficiency, and emissions), using different engine models and computer platforms
  • Fundamental combustion research investigating changes in exhaust gases chemical composition and unregulated engine-out emissions produced during traditional and novel combustion strategies using conventional and alternative fuels. Validate results using numerical models.
  • Study the effect of fuel properties on fuel fouling inside fuel delivery systems and engine components
  • Investigate emissions behavior using conventional and alternative fuel, including diesel fuels containing biodiesel components derived from several feedstock
  • Laser-Induced Incandescence measurements for engine-out smoke emissions analysis

______

Research Assistant, Mechanical Engineering Department Aug 2004 – Dec 2008

University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL

  • Engaged in research directed toward building the science-base on highefficiency, cleancombustion strategies
  • Developed laser-based applications for combustion ignition, diagnostics and control
  • Investigated highenergy pulsed laser transmission through different optical fibers
  • Reported the first gas phase Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) measurements using a fiber-optically delivered spark, showing the possibility of inferring combustion air-to-fuel equivalence ratio from fiber-delivered LIBS signals
  • Developed a fiber probe for remote gas-phase LIBS measurements which substantially simplifies LIBS applications, particularly in radioactive, toxic or combusting environments; reported the influence of energy variation and increasing beam divergence associated with fiber radius of curvature; implemented data processing and statistical methods which significantly reduce shot-to-shot variability and improve LIBS applicability for gas-phase equivalence ratio measurements
  • Developed fiber-based Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) methodology(US patent application)
  • Laser ignition and fundamental laser-induced plasma studies on lean-burn naturalgas engines. Successfully used high-energy laser beams to ignite, diagnostic and control a natural-gas engine
  • Investigate the feasibility of a fast sampling valve which extracts reactants at known locations inside a forming diesel spray, using computer simulation (i.e., FLUENT and CHEMKINsoftware). Experimental data using fast sampling valves can be used to develop accurate mechanisms for modern IC engines combustion strategies
  • Fabricate micro-dent arrays on machined surfaces to improve tribological performance using micro laser shock peening (LSP) (varying diameters from 30 μm to 100 μm.)
