“Bind us together Lord, bind us together in Love”

Sun. 12th October 2014 28th Sunday in Ordinary time

REFLECTION Black tie only

Weddings can be a stressful time. Have you ever seen the TV show 'Bridezilla', which pokes fun at the demands certain brides place on their families and wedding guests? Inevitably the bride ends up falling out with family and friends in her quest to organise the 'perfect' wedding.

Admittedly the wedding industry can be mind-boggling. Some wedding invitations even come with a dress code for guests. But it is difficult to imagine what sort of bride or groom, or their parents, would evict a wedding guest just for wearing the wrong style of clothing.

Yet here is Jesus telling us that the kingdom of heaven is just like that. Those who are not prepared for this banquet will find themselves 'thrown out'. It is hard to reconcile a loving, merciful God with such a heavy-handed approach. Except, it's not really up to God, is it? Look again at the reaction of the different groups to the king's generous invite. The first group were a no-show. The second group were not interested despite a reminder of the hospitality on offer, and some were openly hostile. And of those who accepted the invitation, some did not embrace the experience wholeheartedly. The guest who had no wedding garment was unprepared, and unappreciative of the gifts on offer. Perhaps his heart just wasn't in it.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Matthew 22:1-14

There are two parables here which Matthew has joined together. Looking at the first one:

1. Scripture often speaks of the kingdom of God as a banquet. The image of people being at a meal where everyone is happy and welcome and where all hunger and thirst is satisfied gets across the idea that God loves, accepts and welcomes us and wants us to make that experience available to one another. Think of times in your life when you have had 'banquet' experiences and when you have felt accepted and loved?

2. The host enlists the help of his servants to invite people to the banquet. We are commissioned by the Lord to invite people to the banquet of the kingdom, to the fullness of life - as parents, teachers, friends, etc. What has it been like for you to play a part in leading others to a fuller life?

3. As in the parable last week there is a message about being alert to invitations that offer a fuller life and the danger of losing out if we neglect to respond to such invitations. Perhaps there have been opportunities offered to you that you missed, and now regret. Think also of the blessings you received because you seized the moment and took an opportunity that presented itself.

4. The second parable puts the focus on how we respond to invitations. Some invitations are ones that challenge us to change, to conversion, to put on a 'wedding garment'. What has been your experience of changing in response to an invitation you received?

MUSINGS

The First Reading from Isaiah today will be familiar to many, as it is often the reading chosen for funeral Masses. It promises a time of feasting when the tears of mourning will be wiped from our faces and death will be no more. When Gaelic Irish bardic poets spoke of heaven, they loved the idea of the wine-feast where 'cup-bearer never fails' and the hostess (the Virgin Mary) quickly fills up empty wine vessels. At that feast the only thing missing would be a bouncer at the door, for a hospitable God would not want to keep anyone away.

DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY: Pastoral Centre 25th 26th October 2014. Prayer Cards in the three churches. No 11.15am Mass in Corraleehan on Sun. 26th Oct. - 11.30am Mass in the Cathedral.
