PERIODONTAL MONITORING

Aims and Objectives

To understand BPE (Basic Periodontal Examination) monitoring

Relating the BPE index to treatment plans

When to make a referral

Please return the completed audit to the Local Assessment Panel within 3 months. This audit will have a value of 5 hours audit, as well as 5 hours verifiable CPD.

Method

  1. Decide on the protocol to be used for monitoring the periodontal status of patients using BPE. If necessary, include a plaque index. Please relate this information to the relevance of the treatment plan, or referral.
  2. Using the data capture sheet, carry out a retrospective audit of 30 patients, and if possible, include some patients with code 3 or 4 indices. Then compare the protocol.
  3. After making changes in relation to the retrospective audit, carry out a prospective audit of 30 new patients and compare the data sheet with the protocol.

The protocol should include:

  • How the BPE index will be used, after it has been charted using World Health Organisation (WHO) probe with index 1-4 (+/- *).
  • Relating the treatment plan i.e., oral health instruction, scale and polish, radiographic examination, 6 point charting etc., to the BPE.
  • How and when to refer patients.
