Wildcat Creek restoration project at Collins Hill has been completed!

Georgia Development Partners, through a federal program, undertook the restoration of Wildcat Creek which runs through the back 9 at Collins Hill Golf Club. The project was started in the fall of 2014 and finished in May of this year. While the purpose of the project was to improve stream water quality, the end result is incredible improvements on 4 holes on the back 9. Not only is the playability of holes 11, 12, 14 and 17 greatly improved but the overall beauty of the back 9 has been enhanced. The 11th hole now has a more open feel to it with the right side being cleared out and for those that need to lay up short of the green there is a lot more room. Between holes 11 and 12 there is now a pond with a nice water feature. The right side of 12 was opened up giving the golfer a view of the entire hole from the tee box. Two stack stone bridges were added on holes 11 and 14 where the cart path crosses Wildcat Creek. And lastly, the right side of the 17th hole was opened up for the second shot landing area. We are very pleased with the outcome of the project and can’t wait for everyone to come out to see it.

A Tip from the Pro – John Crumbley, PGA

Speed Control on the Greens

Speed control is almost everything in putting. Poor speed control causes three putt greens and makes it impossible to get the break right on a breaking putt. Think about it. From say 20 feet away you might miss a putt right or left by a foot at the most on a poor effort. But if you get the speed wrong you might be 3 or 4 feet short or long.

Poor speed control comes from not hitting the ball on the same spot of the putter every time. If you hit the ball on the same place of the putter every time you are transferring the same amount of energy to the ball and then how far the ball will roll becomes very predictable. The first key to hitting the ball on the sweet spot is to stay still until the ball is well on its way. I call it “hit, hold and look.” Hit the putt, hold your finish, and then look to see where the ball is heading. If you look too quickly you might move just before impact and mishit the putt. Watch the Tour player and notice how still they are as they stroke a putt. Another way to practice hitting the sweet spot is to put two rubber bands around the putter head on either side of the sweet spot and practice hitting putts between the rubber bands. If you miss the sweet spot you will know because you will hit the rubber bands and the ball will go off sideways.

For more in depth instruction on putting consider taking one of John’s 3 hour putting classes or private lessons. For more information including class schedule go to or call me at 770-469-6913.

100 Ray Floyd Drive, Springfield, TN 37172 | (615) 384-4653 |

The Legacy is the most recent facility to be added to the Cornerstone Golf Partners portfolio. It is a gem of a golf course located just north of Nashville in Springfield, Tennessee. Opened in 1996, the Raymond Floyd signature

course boasts an outstanding layout that will challenge every golfer. Nestled in a quiet community and surrounded by farmland, The Legacy offers a golfing retreat for those willing to venture twenty miles out of the city. The Legacy is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and is home to numerous species of wildlife. The course plays 6776 from the tips, but offers five sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all skill levels. The bentgrass greens are receptive but undulating and require accurate approach shots to get the ball close to the hole. Even then, putting is no bargain.

Cornerstone Golf Partners assumed the operations and management of the Legacy in December 2014. We immediately implemented new procedures and policies to upgrade the golfer’s experience. From the service golfers receive at the bag drop to the new menu and higher quality ingredients in the grill, Cornerstone has focused on providing a level of customer service not previously seen at The Legacy. The same higher standards were also implemented on the golf course where conditions continue to improve. Unfortunately, there was significant damage to the fairways from the harsh winter of 2013-2014 that had not healed when Cornerstone assumed the operations. We are proud to say that the winter damage has been repaired through an aggressive grow-in program and the installation of sod. The course is primed and ready for the fall season.

In addition to improved customer service and golf course conditions, The Legacy now offers a great annual pass program and a growing Men’s Golf Association. The annual pass program enables golfers to purchase a pass that gives them unlimited golf, including cart rental, and range balls. There are numerous options available for potential pass holders including senior, junior, and family plans. The men’s association features monthly tournaments of varying formats in addition to several match play events. There are also weekly games going on every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. There is always something happening for the competitive golfer. If you haven’t been out to The Legacy for a while, we would love to have you come back out and give us a try.
