Cornell Notes: Organization of the Body
How the body is organized: AKA Levels of Organization
- Cells
- Tissues
- Organs
- Organ systems
- (organism)
Tissue: cells working together with a common purpose
Four main types:
- connective tissue
- muscle tissue
- epithelial tissue
- nervous tissue.
Organs: tissue working together with a common purpose
Examples: heart, brain, lungs, “guts”, eyes, ears, skin
Organ Systems: organs working together with a common purpose
Eleven Organ Systems in the human body
1. Nervous System- controls body functions, detects information from the environment.
2. Respiratory System- takes in oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide
3. Digestive System- breaks down food and absorbs nutrients
4. Excretory System- gets rid of waste
5. Skeletal System- supports and protects the body
6. Muscular System- allows movement of body and internal organs
7. Circulatory System- transports materials to and from cells
8. Endocrine System- controls many body processes with chemicals
9. Lymphatic System- “immune system” that helps fight disease
10. Integumentary System: protects the body (skin, hair, nails)
11. Reproductive System: allows new generation to be created
