Coquitlam River Elementary Parent Advisory Council

(CRE PAC)

Tuesday, September 13th, 2016

Meeting was called to order at 7pm by Dianna Hamilton and seconded by Trisha Chitsaz-Ghomi.

1.  In Attendance: Laura Woodward, Patricia Chitsaz-Ghomi, Mett Kwek, Susan Wickham, Ross Jacobsen, Kellly Shinkoruk, Dianna Hamilton, Sofia Haritatou, Zeina Wilkins, Caryl Cosman, Melissa Cupit and Krisin Le Monnier.

2.  Minutes of June 2016 was approved by Susan Wikhman and seconded by Zeina Wilkins

3.  Approval of the Agenda was motioned by Dianna Hamilton and Seconded by Melissa Cupit

4.  Principal’s Report – Ross Jacobsen

a.  Enrollmet/School Organization/Class Building - There are 250 students this year, 6 new students since start of the year from the overflow of other schools. School organization was able to stay the same as the plans in june although a lot of movement was made within the classes. Classes are mostly full. This year there are 9 English and 2 French divisions. It was asked that parents please clearly communicate their needs to Mr Jacobsen prior to class placements (send a letter in May). It was noted that some children were moved after the class placements were complete which could have been prevented with proper communication.

b.  Staffing – This year we have a new speech pathologist – Allison Bardsley. Samantha Ghuman is back as the school consellor and will remain there all year. October 31st temp leave is up in Mrs Andruski’s class. At that time if the Mrs. Andruski chooses not to return the job will be posted. 3 Candidates including Ms. Folz will be interviewed.

c.  Forms and School Cash Online – CRE has one of the highest adoption rates in the district. Last year the school district was covering the 2.5% processing fee this year the school must cover it. We may notice slight increases in costs. Verification forms coming home this week. Emergency Response Forms will not be going home as they were updated in May. If you have any changes please make the school aware of them.

d.  Planners and Fridge Magnets – went out today

e.  Upcoming School Wide Events

i.  Welcoming coversations will replace traditional open house and will allow teachers to meet to discuss fresh grade and each child.

ii.  Teachers will be training on aboriginal studies and fresh grade at the Pro-D-Day on September 23rd.

iii.  Terry fox run will be held on the 29th. If students raise $1500 Mr Jacobsen will complete the winning challenge. PAC will provide apples, cookies and water. We will need 10 volunteers to direct runners and serve food.

iv.  Tennis will take place for a week October 3-7th. There will be a fee which can be paid using school cash online.

v.  Wendy will return to teach the students theirs multicultural dances October 11- 20. Performance will be on October 25th

vi.  Nov 3 will be our annual multi cultural lunch – Kim Culbert will coordinate

vii.  December Christmas concert – one or two songs per division – wendy next year

f.  School goals – Healthy Living and Self Regulations

i.  Healthy Living the focus will be on Healthy relantionships

ii.  Self Regulation the focus will be on Academic

iii.  Ms Guhman, the school counselor will sub off with teachers so they can plan what student services will do when they are visiting each class to work towards academic goals. During this time the Ms Guhman will work on career, education and health with the students. She will be using programs such as Kids In the Know.

iv.  Staff were in support of the PAC bring in the I girl and I boy program for after Christmas

g.  PAC Wish List and Classroom Funds

i.  Teachers suggestions included: Outdoor school, ¾ guitars, newer ipads for the EA room, 5-6 Ipad minis per class, document stands, class sets of white boards ($300-$400 for 4 classrooms sets) dewey document stands ($200 per class (6 class) )

ii.  School wide event wish list includes Iride, gym sense, hip hop, multicultural dance, tennis, art starts, I girl and I boy, Christmas skate/craft day

5.  Chairperson’s Report – Laura Woodward

a.  Cozy Corners - A big thank you to Susan for setting up the cozy corners. They were well received by all.

b.  Movie night – September 16th, 2016. Volunteers needed. Movie will be free for all those who have paid their donation to the PAC.

c.  Movie afternoons – We were lucky to get Secret Life of Pets and the BFG in pre-release. We need 3 volunteers for each day. We will be printing labels for the children attending.

d.  Calendar of PAC events – Calendar will go home on Wednesday with the PAC calendar.

e.  Goals for 2016/Teacher Wish list –see above

f.  Self regulation funds – There is interest from the teachers for more classroom funds. We will look at allocating this money at a later point.

g.  IPads – all classrooms now have Ipads so the teachers can start using Fresh Grade

h.  Classroom funds – Teachers will receive $100 (based on a 1.0 position)

i.  Fridge – We will be looking for a used fridge for the kitchen

6.  Board Reports

j.  Treasurer – Kristin Le Monnier

i.  General Account sits at $5847.64, however we have three outstanding cheques so the actual total is $5,697.56.

ii.  Outstanding cheques:
Babysitting - $15
Jennifer Shaw – $51.08 (this was mailed out to her last week)
ACF/Finding Dory - $84

iii.  Gaming Account sits at $1250.00. We were charged a $7 service fee in June. I have not yet had the opportunity to look into this.

iv.  Gaming Grant: I have checked on the status of our gaming grant and we are still currently in progress. Decisions to be made by end of September.

v.  Cash Flow is currently sitting at $292.56 in general until donations start to come in. $(-2900.00) in gaming.

vi.  Munch-a-Lunch Andrea has opened up Munch a lunch for the PAC Donation and the two early dismissal movies.

vii.  Teacher Wish List: Laura has asked Ross to circulate a wish list so that teachers may express what they would like us to purchase as our cash flow starts to grow.

viii.  Classroom Funds: How are we allocating classroom funds this year? Will it be the same as last year? 1.0 = $100, 0.6 = $60 etc.

k.  Grade 5 Fundraising

i.  Ideas were brainstormed – Silent auction, raffle tickets, Purdy’s chocolates, plants, Neufelds, Tupperware

l.  DPAC – First meeting yet to happen. Laura and Mr Jacobsen to set up membership.

7.  New Business

m.  Suggestion was made to look at setting up an link to amazon so that PAC would receive a portion of amazon purchases made by the PAC. Look into linking amazon to munch a lunch.

n.  It was noted that the school PAC page is not currently being used. The minutes will be sent to Tracey monthly so they can be posted online and on the board following the meetings.

o.  A suggestion was brought forward to set up a PAC page to replace the current facebook pages. Kristin LeMonnier has offered to research.

p.  New lunch options suggestions were made – Subway, Sushi, White Spot, KFC, McDonalds, and Taco Bell

q.  Also a suggestion was made for serving pasta in the gym once a month for a fee. Laura and Susan will try a test run in October.

8.  Adjournment - Caryl Cosmen called adjournment at 8:15. Dianna Hamilton seconded it.
