Kindergarten News

Pete the Cat says, “It’s all good in kindergarten.” Ask your students about the Pete the Cat stories and songs we are learning that help us understand school better and help us make new friends. We have been concentrating on learning our uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet, our essential words in lists 1 - 5, counting from 1 to 30, naming our solid and flat shapes, and much more. We are looking forward to enjoying many Fall activities including Fall Festival on October 23rd from 5 to 7 p.m. Check out our science centers located in the kindergarten pods and see our worm terrarium and ladybug house.

1st Grade News

We have some important events for your first grader. This quarter we are studying Community Helpers. A San Lee Park Ranger will visit our school this month to share some interesting facts about his job and taking care of animals. In October, we will have our school fall festival. Kindergarten through first grade will bring a bag of wrapped candy to school to help with the festival. On November 14th first grade will travel to the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. This is just a few exciting things we have planned for your child. We are looking forward to a great year.

2nd Grade News

2nd grade has had a great start to the school year! In math, we have been learning about adding and subtracting fact families, odd and even numbers, place value, skip counting by 5’s, 10’s, and 100’s, as well as comparing 3 digit numbers. In the coming weeks, we will be learning strategies for both addition and subtraction.

In reading, we have been discovering character and setting, predicting, main idea, and realism and fantasy. For the rest of the quarter, we will be exploring the sequence of a story, how to summarize a story, and reading comprehension techniques. The 2nd grade teachers look forward to a successful school year!

3rd Grade News

Third graders have been very busy this school year learning multiplication facts during math class. In Language Arts, our focus has been learning the different genres of reading and writing. Students are super excited this year about the one to one laptop initiative!! We are reinforcing our skills in all subjects using various websites to enhance instruction. We are looking forward to our first field trip of the year to the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh with Mrs. Bryant. Third Grade is Rocking!!

4th Grade News

Welcome to the fourth grade! Our fourth grade students and staff are rock’n and roll’n as we begin our new school year as an AVID family! This quarter our 4th grade team begins implementing the different AVID strategies as we conquer the curriculum. Our wildcat readers have begun reading multiple chapter books while in math class, they are mastering the skill of numeration. Meanwhile social studies classes are taking learning to another level by discovering their North Carolina Heritage.

In the upcoming month, the students will be taking a field trip to Raleigh and attend the North Carolina Symphony. Please help the teachers by continuing to check your child’s AVID notebooks for organization and to ensure all assignments are completed.

5th Grade News

The fifth grade students are off to a great start! This year as a new AVID Elementary school we are learning to be organized through the use of binders and agendas. Students are building skills and using new strategies both inside and outside of the classroom. Our goal: lifelong learning among all students to succeed in following their dreams and fulfilling their aspirations.

Check out your child’s AVID binder~ we like to call it the “brain” because it is the organizational tool that keeps us accountable and responsible for our learning! Parents-please remember to sign your child’s binder each night and ask your child about what they did in school!

In Math we have reviewed place value and adding and subtracting decimals. Over the next couple weeks we will be working on multiplication and division in whole numbers and decimals. Students should be able to explain the steps for all their work. It is important that your child knows their multiplication facts. Please take a couple minutes daily to ask them the basic facts.

Our 5th grade reading classes have been working on choosing books that best suit our reading needs and ability, distinguishing a difference between fiction and non-fiction text structures, compare and contrast, as well as grammar skills. Over the next few weeks we will be working on making inferences, author’s purpose, making connections, and figurative language. Just a friendly reminder that it is required that your child read for at least 30 minutes each night.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars—

Counselor’s Corner

Hi! My name is Amy Miller and this is my second year here at Broadway as the School Counselor. Throughout the year I do classroom lessons with students on a variety of topics including our character education words and also special events such as Red Ribbon Week, Pennies for Patients, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I also do individual counseling with students as needed as well as small groups with students on topics such as friendship troubles and test anxiety. This year we are very excited to start our Wellness Club. This club meets every Wednesday after school and its focus is to promote healthy living. Each class we will do a physical activity, talk about the healthy choices we are making, and sometimes even prepare a healthy snack. Students are also responsible for keeping a Wellness Journal throughout the year tracking their exercise and eating habits in order to encourage them reflecting on their habits.
