COPOUS: Colonization of Space

Before we get into the topic at hand let me introduce myself. My name is Andrew Tomlinson and I am currently a sophomore at Mission Viejo High School. This is currently my second year in MUN. I am also on the football team I was on JV this year and will be on varsity next year. In my free time I love to surf, body board, and play golf. This is my first year being a chair at a conference. I hope that we can find acceptable solutions while having a few laughs at the same time!

I.Background:

Colonization of space: The United Nations began efforts to make outer space as peaceful as possible in 1950. However early proposals putting sanctions on military for use of outer space several Middle Eastern countries believe that space should be peaceful, and a place for research. Scientists have studied that on average the earth’s temperature rises 3-6 degrees per year. This study urges the need for scientists to collect data and see if there can be life in outer space. However, countries who send their own citizens into space will want to monitor them. There has also been a disarmament enforced for countries or persons traveling to space to ensure safety.

II. UN Involvement: There are also concerns about national resource consumption in the World. With many countries trying to grow to industrial powers today, forests and trees will be cut down for new office buildings making it a worldwide issue. NASA has already been making plans to build a new space station on the moon. This establishment will be dedicated for research to explore the uses of outer space to see if humans have the resources needed for life. NASA also made references to the base on Antarctica and how similar they will be as far as research purposes. The Office for Outer Space Affairs (OOSA) was created to create peaceful resolutions for outer space affairs. This committee was formed to negotiate issues like this and solve them in the most peaceful way possible while getting the agreement of all of the countries to agree on the resolutions formed. This is not just an issue involving several countries; this is a world-wide issue that involves the lives of the human population. There are several UN organizations involved in this topic including: The Planetary Society (TPS), International Astronautically Federation (IAF), and the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT). As well as several other organizations that are not as involved as the ones listed.

III: Possible Solutions:

Possible Solutions that can aid this situation, is to internationalize the universe so that each country has a fair chance to explore it and find it unknown mysteries. Although other countries had different ideas of how to colonize space you should aim towards the idea that space should be internationalized and free to all who wish to explore its’ vast domain. Overall, space colonization is a major issue and needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.

Possible Questions:

Which country has expressed large amounts of interest in space colonization?

What has been passed in order to resolve this issue?

What can you country specifically do to resolve this issue?
